Some nice colour footage of an event I well remember. There is an air of quaintness about the commentary and the responses from those who were interviewed, but this is not a bad thing at all. I fully concur with the comment from an earlier viewer who noted that such a grand rally would be knobbled today by all the greenies and other self-righteous maniacs who intrude into our lives - not to mention the difficulties of navigating the political obstructions of closed borders and aggressive and heavily armed militia at state frontiers.

I wonder what ever happened to the Commodore that they drove. Great story and what an adventure it must have been.

It was sold and competed in a couple of Newcastle rally drivers after this but not sure where it is now.

Good to see another interesting take on this never to be repeated event. Some good footage. Only thing I didn't enjoy was how many Australian place names could the narrator miss pronounce. Yunta not Yoonta, Parachilna not parrakilna and Meekatharra not meekathaara. I thought poor research on pronunciation was more recent but no they were just as bad 40 years ago.

They did it again in 1994. Could be wrong on the year but there was definitely another one, Commodore won again, but not Brock, he crashed out.

Not an event that could happen these days, too many restrictions and greenies plus I doubt any of the modern vehicles would even make the leg to Perth without breaking apart.

and you would be wrong. One of the reasons cars are so damn heavy these days is the structures to meet strict crash standards, they are as strong as hell because of it and can take plenty of pounding.

Cars don't survive in crashes, the only thing that survives is the cabin where the people go, the rest of it gets destroyed with the slightest bump and is needed for the car to work properly. These cars got beaten up enough, the broke about 6 sets of shocks on one leg, in the end it's not about surviving it's about having enough parts.
