"None of us wanted Keith's death to be pointless, which is one of the reasons we decided to carry on, rather than stop." - Pete Townshend
Kevin Cosgrove reports on The Who, as they prepare for their first live performance, at the Rainbow Theatre, following the death of their inimitable drummer Keith Moon.
Cosgrove interviews founder members Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle about the reasons for their return, their burgeoning interests outside of live music - particularly film, and what playing in the world's loudest band has done to their hearing over the years.
Former Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones is now the man behind the kit, how does he feel about taking Keith's place?
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, 17 August, 1979.

I totally agree. Nobody on the planet- not John Bonham or Ringo or Ginger Baker or anybody could have filled Keith Moons shoes in the Who. I don’t care what anyone says he was the greatest drummer in rock history. Kenney was a great guy and did the best job possible under impossible circumstances.

Kenney was also well accomplished with the small faces and faces. Him and moon had the same drum tech and were friends from the late 60s. He was the natural choice. Wasn’t about style but what Pete wanted after moon passed.

He helped the transition of the band into the 80's sound of rock music that was less chaotic (more formulaic?) You can hear John's bass explore more interesting lines on the Face Dances album probably because of Kenny's style.

The Who p*&£$d on Zeppelin and the Stones basically because they had better songs and ideas - they weren't rooted in the Blues. Impressed by The Ox's honesty there, admitting he felt "a lot freer" playing with Jones as a rhythm section. Keith Moon may have been a genius but without a bass player with the genius of Entwistle it never would have worked. In the spring of 1980. in the recent wake of the tragic Cincinnati incident, The Who announced a live concert in Vancouver Canada. Unfortunately you had to submit your name in a lottery raffle. If your name was selected, the you were eligible to buy the tickets. There were 900,000 entries for a 16000 seat concert. My Name wasn't selected. Unlike other missed shows, I felt duped. I don't think the lottery system was ever used again.

Pete never managed to scale the composition / hit heights after Tommy and Whos Next in the early - mid 1970s.. that is after his mentor and inspiration, Kit Lambert self-destructed before Quadrophenia was half done. KIt's tombstone reads; " KIT LAMBERT; THE MAN WHO MADE TOMMY " / MADE THE WHO Begs questions, that????

Undoubtedly a talented bunch of guys. But I've always been somewhat dubious about Townshend, given his well-documented connection to Operation Ore in the early Noughties. On a lighter note, the band grew up and went to school (and initially performed) locally to us.

@@hardlines2635 once again for the hard of thinking. He told the Police he was going to purchase child porn online, in advance. He was researching for his biography. He was abused himself as a child. The Police operation found that he had viewed but not downloaded the material (viewed in the case of jpegs or similar can mean just clicked on, that's enough to modify the date). He told he Police in advance that he would do this and pay with his credit card. He admits he was coming at the whole thing with a 'White saviour' complex, but thought it should be exposed as he felt banks were complicit. He accepted the caution rather than go to court. The Police officers investigating the incident actually wrote to him in support of his claims.
