1979 Sugar Bowl

This is the 1/1/1979 Penn State vs Alabama game. It matched 1 vs 2 in the AP poll. Penn State was reknowned for their linebackers but this season with Matt Millen and Bruce Clark at Defensive tackle, they might have had their best defensive team ever. Alabama was not short on the defensive side either. Led by All American Barry Kraus. For a football purist, this was one the best games ever played. It was won by #2 Alabama on a late Goalline stand. I claim no rights.

What a game. Alabama's goalline stand was one of the most memorable moments in college football history. Quite a Penn State team too. They routed Ohio State in Columbus in the opener.

Not sure why, but to me Major Ogilvie is the epitome of an Alabama player. He wasn't necessarily a star, but the guy who makes smart decisions and does the little things to win.

I was there. I've been to over 600 Tide games and I have to list this as one of the top five significant wins (maybe top two) since the early 1970's. The goal line stand has become part of college football folklore, and a seminal moment in the history of the sport.
