Playboy magazine used to publish an annual review of colleges around the country. One year, when ND was still all men, Playboy described them as "Horny and hale." Not surprised you found the USC song girls crush worthy. Lord knows how you could have handled yourself on the USC campus. USC had some talent in those days.

I remember watching this game on TV, but this wasn't HOW I remembered it. The Irish played the Trojans close fir 1 half and were blown out by CCharles White and Student Body Left and Student Body right - well, no. Paul McDonald's passing was also key to putting up 42 points on the Irish at Touchdown Jesus. The Irish didn't fold in the second half. They continued fighting all the way to the end which is about as well as you expect anyone to play USC in those days. It was a much better game than I remembered.

Before their was an ESPN, ABC was the first network to have regional coverage of college football. They were like ESPN and the NFL covering networks all rolled up into one. And they had the two best announcers in all the sport. Keith and Frank. And those two both came from Georgia. Keith from Carrollton and Frank from Atlanta. They were true excellent and outstanding announcers. Never will be a pair like them again.

Both teams racked up over 500 yards of total offense in this game. Dan Devine must have let the players decide if they wanted to have their names on their jerseys in '79. Only a few chose to do so, it would seem. John Hankerd was drafted by Denver after the 1980 season, but left training camp when he decided he'd had enough football.

USC beat Bama in 78 then blew the Arizona State in the desert and Bama ran the table and they split the title. Then in 79 USC had that tie and then did Bama a favor by beating undefeated Ohio State by one point in the Rose Bowl Game. And the Tide went 12-0 beating Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl to win the National Championship outright.

With all due respect to Dan Devine, if Ara P had stuck it out through the end of the 70s (he wasn't that old), ND would have won 2 or 3 more NCs. Bama had NO OFFENSE in the 70s, neither did Michigan for the most part. Frickin Pitt won in 76. It was there for the taking.

Ara was burned out at the end of the '74 season. He made a prophetic statement in 1970 when the contracts to renew the Michigan series starting in 1978 were signed. Bo Schembechler, who was a good friend of Ara's, said, "Ara, I'm gonna whip your ass!" Ara replied, "I'll be long gone by then."
