Possibly the best Nickel LB in NFL History. Spent most of career as a non starter but I would not say he was a back up, he had a role and was the best in the league at that role especially during the Gibbs years. Had a few seasons as a starter including the 1987 Super Bowl Season. Had one season where he was a pass rushing demon in 1984, he also was a shut down cover LB shutting won RB's coming out of the backfield. One of my favorite all time Redskins.
@johnvisconti98484 жыл бұрын
@@johnliberty3647 He was a great Nickel LB. Do you remember his nickname among his Redskins teammates?
@johnliberty36474 жыл бұрын
@@johnvisconti9848 If I knew I forgot it. Sometimes I wonder if Gibbs made him a Nickel LB to keep him fresh because when he was a starting LB he stopped the run as good as any other LB, and better than some of the starters. I felt he was as good as Wilbur Marshall and better than Andre Collins back in 1991. I felt he was better than Milot and as good as Kaufman in 1982.
@johnvisconti98484 жыл бұрын
@@johnliberty3647 The idea about Gibbs wanting to keep him fresh is interesting. After all, he was asked to cover lots of ground when he played Nickel in obvious passing situations. In the mid-to-late 80's, lots of teams liked to get multiple WR's on the field and then get a fleet-footed RB to the second or third-level against a LB. The Giants did it with Dave Meggett and the Skins themselves did it with Kelvin Bryant. It required solid pass protection from your five OL's, because they received no help from TE's or RB's, but if you could get the 2.1-- 2.3 seconds, you could make big plays. In the modern game, those match-ups happen less frequently, as LB's are typically replaced by extra defensive-backs. But Gibbs listened to Petitbon, and if the DC wanted to save Monte Coleman for particular scenarios, he would get it. I agree with all of your assessments/comparisons, except the one about Wilbur Marshall. I mean, it depends what you want to do with your LB's. But Marshall was special. You could deploy him as a pass-rusher, he had tremendous range as a run-defender, and he had the power and strength to stack up TE's and FB's at the point of attack. Few LB's could make plays in both space and traffic like a healthy Wilbur Marshall. He did have lots of nagging injury problems after leaving Chicago, however. Monte Coleman's Redskin teammates called him 'Superman,' or 'Supes,' because of his physique. The nickname was not well known to the public.

Henderson’s last game for Dallas. I read both of Hollywood Henderson’s books. I highly recommend them. He became an incredible human being!
@kercht55783 жыл бұрын
This was an incredible game, back when these two teams used to just beat the absolute hell out of each other just about every time they played. The Redskins' defense was just UNREAL in this game. Just brutal. Especially Coy Bacon. That guy never got enough credit. Some say he should be the NFL's all-time sack leader, as he was playing for years before they started counting sacks. He had three alone in this game, as well as a recovered fumble. I remember how awesome the team seemed to be this year. Unfortunately, under Pardee, they always seemed to get JUST to the point of taking the brass ring, and then they'd fall apart. The year before, they started 6-0, then missed the playoffs at 8-8. Not easy to do. They were a much better team in '79, but same problem came back to bite them in Dallas at the end of this year, one of the most soul-crushing defeats in team history. Up 17-0, then blew that lead, then retook the lead late and were up by 13 with just a few minutes left. Pardee went ultra-conservative and the team couldn't even get a first down. Meanwhile, Captain Comeback leads Dallas to a near-miraculous 35-34 victory, knocking the Skins out of the playoffs. That was devastating. What's interesting here is at the end, when Moseley is about to come in to kick that last field goal, you can see Riggins waving him off. You could tell he didn't want the team to do this. Yes, they were trying for playoff points, but I know Dallas used this as motivation in the last game, saying the Redskins had run up the score on them. Riggins was probably right. Anyway, all that said, Dallas probably did the team a favor by beating them in the final game and knocking them out of the postseason, because that led to Pardee getting fired the next year and Gibbs coming in, which led to 3 championships in 4 Super Bowl appearances and a dynasty. This rivalry was so intense in those days, though. There was nothing like it.

I recall this game only because Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson was cut the next day due to his antics on the sidelines while the Cowboys were being beat. Henderson had the talent and ability to be the original no. 56 before Lawrence "LT" Taylor made that no. famous for linebackers. In addition to run support, coverage, and blitzing, Henderson was an excellent return man. How many linebackers could return kicks? They both also had similar personality traits. The difference was that Taylor could, at least while he was playing, control "LT" while Henderson couldn't control "Hollywood." Henderson is a totally different man today and has acknowledged his mistakes. He's also had the last laugh by winning $28 million in the Texas lottery about 20 years ago.

Olkewicz not Coleman. Coleman did not start in this game and without looking it up I do not believe he started in Super Bowl 17. He did start in Super Bowl 22 because Milot was phasing out due to age. Coleman was more than capable of starting and playing all linebacker positions. And might have been better than all the starters. Stopping the run takes a toll on Linebackers and Coleman playing a nickel role most of his career might be why he got a decent paycheck for about a decade and a half. I honestly believe Coleman would have been a regular at the pro bowl if not for being a nickel LB his entire career but he played 4 super bowls which is much better.

KINDA, the Skins fired Pardee a year later and ended up with Joe Gibbs, the only coach they ever had to win a Super Bowl or 3. It's not like the Cowboys won the Super Bowl or like the Redskins were going to. For the Cowboys of the 70s? Winning a division? Is that really a big deal? Roger was amazing and pulled one right out of his you know what in week 16, and we're all better off for that. But, Devi's Advocate, as a football fan, if Washington had won, it would have been Dallas at Philly in the WC game, the winner would have gone to Tampa Bay with the Rams playing at the Redskins. Do you really think the Cowboys would have lost to Philly or Tampa? I don't. And the Rams weren't gonna win in a cold weather game in Washington. So then you get Washington hosting Dallas in the NFC Championship game. If Washington wins, Pittsburgh kills them and they don't fire Pardee the next year. If Dallas wins, the Steelers kill them and the Redskins probably still don't fire Pardee. So what did you really win in that game, Cowboys?

They were the only NFC east team not to beat the Giants in Giants stadium in 79! That was one of 2 games that the Redskins wasted an opportunity to beat teams that they were supposed to beat! The other was a week 9 loss to New Orleans!

Perhaps it's psychological: after finally dominating their most bitter rival, after years of being dominated by them, they probably felt like they had just won the Super Bowl, and so were emotionally flat the following week.

Well they were up and coming and didn't have a great coach. The last game of the year had me in tears.

They were better in this game and most of the last game, but Staubach did his thing...

I love Madden but in many ways Brooky was better. Had a laid back lets have a beer and watch the game vibe.
