John Madden and Pat Summerall was the number one announce team. They were the A Team! When you heard Madden and Summerall you knew that either a first place was being decided, a HUGE rivalry was about to go down, or a classic NFL game was being played! Madden LOVED the rivalry games. Packers-Bears, Redskins-Cowboys, etc. He lived for the big fights! The Heavyweight battles! These were epic!

Nobody in the 70s and 80s ran the screen pass better than the Cowboys. Landry really knew how to coach his players on it. As a Skins fan, every time I saw them set it up, I thought, "Oh no, here it goes....' I knew they'd get 20 or 30 yards on it, especially with Dorsett.

Theismann took a terrible beating in this game. The following week against the Cardinals, he took some huge hits and a bunch of sacks. Then in the playoff game at RFK against da Bears, Richard Dent and company practically put him in the hospital. After every hit, Theismann jumped up and went back to the huddle. Never complained, and rarely even missed a snap. Say what you will, but he was one of the toughest, grittiest QBs in the game. I think after these 3 games, he was never quite the same. He probably shouldn't have scrambled as much as he did, but that was his competitive nature.

Fun fact: during the seasons in which the Cowboys won 3 of 4 Super Bowls in the 1990s.... Washington actually won 4 of those 6 regular season games in those seasons... Unbelievable... And one of those games Heath Shuler led the Redskins to a win over a Dallas team that went on to win the Super Bowl that following postseason.

@@bradleyhudgins1005 That's what makes it a great rivalry! The sad flip side to it is, in 2 out of our 3 Super Bowl winning seasons, the Cowpies beat us at home (though we got sweet revenge in the 1982 NFC Championship Game). 1987 was the *only* season in which we won the SB *AND* swept the Cowblows (including the legendary Replacements Game).

There really is no such thing as 'defense' in the modern NFL. We will never see the level of defense and hitting that existed in the 70s, 80s,90s and somewhat in the early 2000s. What you see now is just a parody of the old NFL. A bunch of guys in tights and dreadlocks doing bellyflops and diving at ballcarriers' ankles.

On the drive that the Redskins scored the game winning TD it was interesting that Madden was endorsing Theismann calling his own number and running a naked bootleg as he did against the Falcons in their Monday night game that season. The called play was an off tackle run for Riggins but Theismann kept the ball and pretty much walked in for the TD. Madden saw the Cowboys D was selling out on Riggins and the play likely would have worked again.

@@SingleTax quite right by the time Danny broke his wrist in 86 he was practically carrying the team. 6 and 2 with him under center pre injury and 1 and 7 without him under center. And his wrist was never the same again after that and Coach Landry never had another winning season nor did Dallas until 1991. Same thing happened with Dorsett really. He was still a solid productive back until Walker came on to the team and started taking more and more of the snaps. I loved Coach Landry like he was my father but he made some horrible choices when it came to shuffling QBs in the 80s. I could never understand why he was so invested in replacing Danny.

As life long Redskins fan I knew the Cowboys as well as anybody and for awhile in the 70’s Dallas had a system and was ahead of the times Shotgun, 3 down back, double reverses, They were a well organized team but when they would play the Steelers they were much Stronger and bigger and that was the only difference was a couple dropped passes..Here and there but in 1982 The Redskins took over the East They became a beast it helped to have Theismann he could run.. But the game passed T Landry by But they threw him in the trash like Jerry Jones does all his Coaches They probably are who complained and made us changed our name.. I find that there are/were two types of Cowboy fans when it came to the subject of Danny White: supporters and critics. I never had full confidence in him. But by 1984, it was the start of a low point for the Cowboys as the times had begun to eclipse coach Landry and the flex defence.

Never have been able to understand the critics myself. Lord knows Hogeboom wasn't the answer and he was better than all of the QBs in the great 84 draft EXCEPT Elway and Marino. Any team in the league during that era would have LOVED a QB that consistently threw for 3000 yards and put up more TDs than INTs when he was healthy and allowed to start for a full season. Any team of that era would have LOVED to have had his win/loss record. And lord knows the win/loss record Dallas put up without him healthy and starting was completely atrocious.

1:03:19. Darrell. Green in his first all pro year. burned deep by a white guy (I know I know race doesn't matter). Darrell Green is still my favorite all time Cornerback, I was just shocked to see him get burned deep by someone who was a just an average to good player. Good move by Renfro.

Yeah pretty much. I mean yeah if they had beaten the Dolphins they would have been in but this was the year Marino took them to the Super Bowl and I think they lost maybe twice all year before SF clean their clock. Dan and the Marks brothers were phenomenal that year, too bad they had No D at all. Doesn't matter because NY got in and lost to SF in the playoffs anyway, likely Dallas would have too.

Football like madden stated in his opening is run the ball and stop the run - I stop watching the NFL 14 years ago when what I call "the revenge of the nerds" began impacting the game with analytics and fantasy football (and of course always racism) - this past first is like the CFL (which I enjoy because it is still authentic) - the NFL should just go ahead expand the field and go to an 18 game schedule like the CFL -
