The eight inning of game four. The high tide for the Orioles and the World Series in their grasp. Ironically and seemingly incredibly after this game for Baltimore, it was over for them after a three game collapse.

It was looking good through four innings of the fifth game. After that, not so good. Had the Orioles won game two - they should have - they would have won the series.

@@zephead843 Game two was a huge defeat no doubt. I was thinking also how in 1971 and '79 we never saw Jim Palmer pitch at Three Rivers Stadium. All his starts were at Memorial Stadium where he pitched well in all four games.

@@searchforthestrangler5034 Interesting observation about Palmer. I didn't know that. I also didn't know that McGregor could switch hit and was a better hitter in high school than George Brett The Orioles lit Tekulve up in game 4, which was gratifying to say the least. After that he was unhittable. The '79 WS is my all time favorite, even better than '86.

Tim Stoddard was the unsung hero of this game. After playing in the majors for 4 seasons, he got his first ML at bat in game 4, got a hit, drove in the go ahead run and was the winning pitcher for game 4. Orioles lost the series but returned in 1983 and Stoddard was still on the team and received Championship Ring. Stoddard is only man to receive Championship rings in two sports. He was starting forward for NC State in 1974 NCAA champions Men’s basketball (Thompson, Towe, Burlerson, Mo Rivers) and 83 MLB WS Champions Orioles.

Pirates and Orioles had their glory days at about the same time. The Pirates won it all in 1960, 1971 and 1979 while the Orioles won it all in 1966, 1970 and 1983. With the Orioles young hitters and the Pirates starting pitchers, maybe they can meet up in the series again in the 20’s…
