God in grade 9 i wanted that bike (in red) more than the blonde girl that sat in front of me. And funny thing is i still feel that way today!! Why oh why don't they build bikes like that today? Clean simple design. Built to last. Sigh. What this generation is missing

what a great bike, I had a 1981 model it was red. I bought it 2nd hand and had it for nearly 20 years. I used it for commuting everyday in all sorts of weather and on weekends would go exploring through the state forest. It was a true little enduro, so easy to ride and reliable. They should continue to make them.

I had an 83 175mx when i was 15 rode it to the track round track for couple hours then home again, i just 3 n a half weeks ago bought an 02 DT125R for road and light trial use, i know you dont get them in America, shame they are great little bikes!! Click on my picture and youll get a video of mine running its a little smoky as had a full engine rebuild and its burning off the oil they used when rebuilding it but it runs sweet, liquid cooled and powerful little bike too, front wheel easily pops up with not much effort, great bikes!!👍🏼

I had a ‘78 in red when I was in high school. Growing up in the Adirondack mountains we had minibikes (Trail 70) but this was my dad’s first street legal bike. He drove it for a couple years and then bought a BMW and handed the DT down to me. I didn’t have a car and I drove it all over the place. When I took my motorcycle license test it was snowing, and was starting to stick on the ground as I finished my figure eights. Passed the riding test. I would ride my DT anytime there wasn’t snow or ice on the ground, and occasionally when there was. There were very few days in between riding my bike and riding my snowmobile.

In the late 80s i left NZ for a working holiday in the UK, got a job as a courier rider in London, did it for about 4 years, from a small town in NZ to riding around London. It was like riding around the monopoly board seeing all the landmarks and street names. First thing i learnt was that road rules went straight out the window :-) Crazy job, but good fun (mostly) and good money.

Had that exact bike(my first bike)..loved it...I rebuilt it from a basket case, no joke all the parts were in a mike crate...and I put it back together. I bought parts every other day at Wayne Cycle Shop in waynesboro Virginia....and got it going...At that shop they seen that I knew what I was doing so they hired me on to work on bikes every day...I was in heaven...and not only that ...I got my bike parts at cost...............Nice bike you got there...and now I want another one.

My best friend and neighbor ( growing up) is three years older than myself (he’s 59 now) In 1978 he bought a new red DT125, and his older brother got a yellow DT400. AWESOME memories helping them maintain those beauties, and zipping around on the 125 ! That’s a nice one Ken !

I learned how to ride bikes on this exact bike when I was also about 13 or 14. My dad loved the vintage dirt bikes. I still have it and I plan on doing a nice restoration on it this winter. Very fun bike and it being street legal makes it awesome to putt around town.

I've had my DT 175F for over 10 years - couldn't start it for the past month - so today when it wouldn't start - checked the fuel to carb - no worries - better check the spark plug - hmm what a mess - cleaned with a wire brush - refitted - 1st kick - nnnng - nnnng a nnnng - they really are top bikes!!

Nice looking example. I have a 1980 DT175 (red scheme) that I bought off my then brother-in-law. It had some bent levers and a flattened rear rim and a base gasket as well crank seals other than that it was in decent shape. I replaced those items and took the rim Wheel Works here in Garden Grove to be fixed as best as they could. I also had the front forks and monoshock rebuilt by PEP, rebuilt the carb and installed a Manracks tail rack.

I was just given a 73 dt175. It’s in really rough shape. I’m going to fully restore it then add some mods. The original engine is toast. I’m gonna bore it out and add a reed valve. The original pipe is gone so I might upgrade that as well. I’m gonna re chrome and powder coat everything. Hopefully I can get it close to the original paint.

That's a great bike, And I cannot think of anything on the market today that compares. If you can think of anything Is this slim light powerful And street legal let me know. Still have my 81, My old girlfriend could keep up with me on my XT 600 on trail rides and on the highway. It's also a 6 speed, And this suspension torque and tractability of the motor are really good considering considering the small size weight and low seat height.

The only thing I'd add is they are not really a motocross style motor. The IT series is closer to motocross than DT. Same bottom end really, the IT just lacks the oil pump, and the top ends are ported differently. DT rides more like a tractor :) Unless you swap the silencer for an unrestricted one and then you're rippin'! Can also clean up factory ports and get a couple extra hp out of it...tons of stuff can be done to these bikes for cheap power.

Hi. So I recently picked up this exact bike in a 1980. It had sat for years. After cleaning the carb and fresh gas it fired up. Ran a few loops throughout the day and parked it in the evening. Next morning it refused to start. I put a new spark plug in and if I spin it over with a drill i get pretty good spark. But when kicking it over i get little to no spark. Anyone point me in the right direction on diagnosing this. This one doesn't have the points so i guess its the cdi ignition. TIA
