My grandparents had a 86 Oldsmobile 98 with the diesel. They put just over 245,000 on it driving it back and forth 5-6 times a year to their house in Florida. Pop keep meticulous records, even the fuel. Trips that boat averaged between 41-45 mpg

@@jacknapier7740 One thing people who don't understand motor engineering seem to miss is that horsepower isn't everything. Those of us who drive old, large displacement motors of the 70's and 80's live this every day. We have "gutless wonders" that have very poor horsepower ratings, yet still have zero problems getting up to speed in traffic, and can pull very heavy weight up grade without any issue. In the end, the high displacement leads to very high low end torque, meaning even if it isn't the fastest, it always has plenty of actual pull to do anything asked of it. They are not under powered in practical situations, because they can always pull. The old Caddy diesels, the NA diesels in general of those years, and even the big displacement V8's of that era, will move those big cars and light trucks around just fine. Effortlessly, even. The only time you notice the lack of horsepower is when you open them up. Then they are just painful to drive, and that's when you realize how castrated they were those years. Or the limits of those old NA diesels in acceleration.
