1980 East German Workers Day Parade | (Short Preview)

The May 1, 1980 International Worker's Day Parade held on Karl Marx Alle in East Berlin.
Every year on May 1, the GDR authorities held a parade in celebration of International Worker's Day. The main participants of the parade were the "Combat Groups of the Working Class" (Kampfgruppen der Arbeiterklasse), abbreviated as the KdA, was a paramilitary force that consisted of regular every day civilians who took up arms and combat training on the weekends during the Cold War.
The parade was attended by East German leader and General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party, Erich Honecker.

The "Combat Groups of the Working Class", also known as the "KdA", was a paramilitary organization made up of thousands of regular hard working citizens. It functioned as a de facto militia force in the event of a war. At its peak in 1980, the KdA consisted of 211,000 personnel. These civilians received combat and weapons training in their free time, typically on the weekends to prepare the population of an armed conflict with the West. These combat groups consisted of doctors, plumbers, engineers, teachers, dentists, clerks, etc. They were armed with MPi-KM (AK47/AKM) assault rifles and were able to operate 82mm mortars, anti-tank artillery guns, and Soviet BTRs (Armored Personnel Carriers)
