She was incredible, but she wasn't a jazz singer, she was known for singing Bossa Nova. And no, Bossa Nova is not Brazilian Jazz. Bossa Nova is its own style, it is not a subgenre of Jazz.
@GelapMasai
@GelapMasai 8 ай бұрын
@@robemachado Bossa nova, which literally means “new wave,” was a blending of samba and jazz that rose out of a guitar school formed in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana neighborhood in 1956. Bossa Nova was a soft samba based on traditional Brazilian music and rhythms, American jazz, and a new style of Portuguese lyrics. It is basically a fusion of Samba and Jazz, so using traditional Brazilian rhythms but with more harmonically complex jazz harmony and more melodic dissonance. Bossa Nova music was created and grew from Brazilian traditional culture. Maybe for the rest you can look for information and read jazz music references about the Bossa Nova genre

Sadly, she has left us. What a remarkable interview this was. I had always wondered why she never became a giant star after getting all the attention she did. A truly unique voice and music style. Back in the 60's Bossa Nova taught many rocker's to appreciate jazz, including myself. Astrud and Stan Getz performed many beautiful songs. Cordovado was one of my favorites. Smooth and silky.

What was most strange to me is to realize that most Brazilian people had kinda disdain for her. May be it's because of her European origins or her affair with Stan Getz. I don't know... But she was the right person in the right place at the right time to make Bossa Nova reach its worldwide audience. Not bad for a 23 years woman who was in love with Brazilian popular music... R. I. P. Astrud. Your voice managed to sray in my deepest soul

Brazilian people has 62% of ADN from Europe (Portugal is Europe or Asia?), Carmem Miranda was european. Bossa Nova is not ''Brazilian Popular Music'' (MPB in Portuguese), this term is an elitist expression criated after hype on Bossa wave (end of 1960's) to classify a kinda of music of Brazilian urban high middleclass with 'left' tendencies (that in France is named ''Bobo''). Bossa Nova is based on, obviously high levels of syncopation from African músic influence (is the reason of the rythm being named '' *Afro* - Brazilian Jazz''). You see anyone talking of black American people that don't are big fan of jazz as ''disdainers'' of their roots, do you? Same with Brazilian people that is not afficionate of Bossa Nova, because this rythm is a hybrid of African with another rythms like bolero (México), if black Brazilian people or even white Brazilians (or with phenotipical ''European roots') have huge preferences, these are directed to samba, forró, frevo, because of originality on compositions and melodies.

@@henrybrowne7248 Bossa nova was created by the elite of Rio de Janeiro, at a time when only the elite dictated what would become popular. Otherwise, the style would not spread so quickly around the world. But it soon lost strength in the 60s, giving rise to other musical styles that were more politically combative and also used the complex harmonies of Bossa Nova. The main style that emerged was called MPB, which has also been out of breath in recent years in Brazil.
