Stan Getz was my cousin. I didn’t meet him much as he was a lot older than me, but he was the famous one of the family. He was given a toy guitar as a kid and played it all the time. My aunt brought him up as his father passed very young. He really was something to listen to on the sax. And with Astrud there singing, they made beautiful music together. RIP Stan & Astrud.

Astrud, a Brazilian house wife, came to America because she spoke more English than Tom or João and their phrase book English. Astrud's father was a language professor and she spoke several languages. While recording, João asked Astrud to sing some verses in English. She didn't have a professional voice, however the voice and the music had a haunting dream-like quality and the rest became musical history.

This is something you had to live with day after day, not just by watching music on KZbin - i was lucky to live in Brasil, from Europe back in the 70s, Tom Jobim, Toquinho, Vinicius...the new Bossa Nova of the 80s.
