19:20 That hit by Manny, that call by Harry, still brings a feeling of incredible joy inside. Like the moment it happened in 1980. Still get goosebumps every time I play it. It will be with me till the day I die.

5:04 That McBride to Trillo to Boone play still gives me chills. One of the single greatest plays in Phils’ history, great play by all 3 guys.
@16rumpole4 жыл бұрын
That is my favorite part of the series. Trillo's throw was so fast that it warped spacetime.
@crazysteve93904 жыл бұрын
ah mecorp it’s hard to argue with that, but Boone’s play, blocking the plate with just his left foot while catching Trillo’s bullet and sweeping the tag all in one motion is pretty legendary stuff too. Honestly McBride played it absolutely perfectly too. But yeah, not many second basemen in history go that far out into rf to take a relay and then make that throw all the way on the fly to the plate. Extraordinary stuff all around.

I was 14 at the time and watched as many games as I could. My father wouldn't let me watch the end of game 5 because I think it was a school night. The whole series was just exhausting to watch. I loved hearing HK 's voice. it was so silky smooth.

Major League Baseball rules at the time prohibited local radio stations from broadcasting their own feed of the World Series. Thus the CBS radio national feed was the only radio broadcast allowed for the 1980 World Series. Phillies fans protested to the commissioner's office about this rule after the World Series and the rule was subsequently changed to allow the home team flagship radio station to carry their own audio broadcast of the home team World Series games.

@@MontgomeryMall thanks for the info on that. Was just about to ask or duckduckgo it. I agree. There have been many amazing best-of-5 series (LCS and Division series), but this is the only one in which all 5 games were tight. Another best of 5 in which all 5 games were close was (until the 2005 season) - 1981 Division Series, when the Yankees beat the Brewers - 2005 Division Series, When the Angels beat the Yankees Some will say Yankees-Mariners in 1995, but game 3 was just ok Some will say Yankees-Indians 1997, but game 3 was just ok

Love when Pete Rose was walked by Ryan when he was tiring, and Rose characteristically threw the bat toward the dug out and started that "hustle" toward 1st Base. But, as he trotted he gave Ryan a good long look as if to say, "you're done for the evening."

Back in 2010, I was in Houston for work, and across the parking lot my hotel had a view of Reliant Stadium (now called NRG Stadium) and diagonally behind it was the Astrodome. I remember looking reverently out the window at the Astrodome, thinking, "There's where the Phillies won the pennant in 1980." Wow.

I lived in Philly and took my first steps during this game. Nolan Ryan was the starting pitcher for Houston. When I was 4 we moved to Texas. We landed in a suburb south of Houston. In 1999 while in between USMC boot camp and Going to Camp Pendleton we went to the airport and my mom says "look look look. It's Nolan Ryan." We all went to my gate and he was sitting there alone with a big 10 gallon cowboy hat on. Me and 2 of my friends went up to him and asked for his autograph and all we had was 1 dollar bills so he signed them. Shook my hand and said I must be a Marine with that haircut. His hand was like holding onto bigfoot's palm that had bananas for fingers. He was giant compared to me. I was 5ft 6in. Super nice and told us he was headed to Oklahoma to do something with the minor league team. Now I currently live in Nolan Ryans hometown of Alvin. He wasn't born here. He was born in an even smaller town. A ranch town called Refugio which the locals I've met there say it like " rifurio". Kinda full circle. I'm an Astros fan and a Phillies fan. Took my first steps in Philadelphia during a game which Nolan Ryan was pitching against them and met Nolan Ryan and live in his hometown where he still lives. He does have a ranch out in west Texas. I've never watched this or the highlights but wierd to think I was walking my first steps as this was played.

Some teams are very good. The Philadelphia Phillies had a great team by 1976, 1977 and '78 but failed 3 straight times to the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers. Sometimes a great team needs somebody to get them over the hump. And that guy was defitnitely Pete Rose. Just like the San Francisco 49ers could not beat the Dallas Cowboys in two straight NFC Championship games in 1992 and '93. And the guy that took them over the hump was Deion Sanders. The same happened to the Philadelphia 76ers in the late 70s and early 80s. They needed a man to take them over the hump to win it all until the great Moses Malone came by and win it all. I remember that 1980 NLCS Game 5. I was crying in the game before that one on game 4. I thought that the Phillies were going to lose both games, but they came back. I was happy for the Phillies.

I was 8. My parents went to a Chinese restaurant for what reason I don't know, but the service kept us in the restaurant until the 7th inning. We get home and they're down 3. What?! My dad almost punched a hole in the wall which we had to repair years later before selling the house (not unlike my chest bumping and breaking the hinges of my own closet after the sack of Brady, but that's another story). The roller coaster of the whole thing probably took a year off his life.....who knows, but the end wound up with him saying: "Well, I guess Leon Stickle can't f#$k us with this one..." .....even at 8, I knew exactly what he meant. Unfortunately, I repeated that phrase in Mrs. Popper's 3rd grade class, but since I had all As at the time, I skated off with a slap on the wrist. Do your homework, kids, and maybe YOU can get away with that in 3rs grade too!!!!!
