Well done Eric. I very much enjoy all of your videos and look forward to the uploads. Many thanks. It brings back memories. I regret that I'm now at the point where the only rugby league that I watch these days are retro games such as these on You Tube. I love watching rugby league games where * the players played for clubs and not franchises, * the clubs represetned a district and a tribe not a faux mascot (whats a titan, a bronco or a storm ?), * where there was more than one grade, * players had day jobs, * the players were mostly anglo-Irish and most probably had a catholic upbringing *no tats, weird harcuts or body piercing * some players were unfit. * no one took steroids, * they did some weight training but didn't pump iron twice per day * the jerseys were'nt covered in advertising and they had real scrums on crappy suburban grounds. Sure - life has to move on and players have to be rewarded. Balmain and Newtown probably have more vilin players in their suburbs now than rugby league players. The sport has evolved and is now just a product. The players sign contracts with the NRL and not the team and the teams aren't clubs - they're frnachisees of the NRL. I know people think that I'm probably a dinosaur.I'll just live on in the past and watch these games Eric and fondly remember these days. They were the golden days. We were gifted to have lived through them.

Misspelling alert. I meant to write that there are probably more "violin" players in Balamin and Newtown now that rugby League players. Not that I have anything against people who play the violin of course.

If you look at the team cards at the end of this video, you'll notice a young kid named Brett Kenny playing in the centres in the under-23s for Parramatta, together with a few other kids who rose to play First-grade for Parramatta in later years. Parramatta won the Premiership in the year after this season and the team that played in the above game is a far cry from that 1981 Premiership winning team. No Brett Kenny, no Mick Cronin, no Steve Ella, no Eric Grothe, no Ray Price, no John Muggleton. John Muggleton was known for his defence. After Muggleton retired from rugby-league, the Australian Wallabies rugby-union team hired him as their *defense* coach. That tells you just how highly-regarded John Muggleton was for his defence. Just a personal comment on Peter Wynn. Wynn owned and ran a sports store in Parramatta named "Peter Wynn's Score" which I used to walk past every day after work. One day I decided to go inside and have a look around. I tell you, the completely unsolicited pressure that Wynn exerted upon me to buy a rugby-league jersey and other items in his store totally shocked me. I was amazed by his unprofessionalism. I could buy 5 jerseys if I wanted to, but his high-pressure sales technique totally turned me off, and I was on my way home. I lost all respect for Wynn that day. He was even telling the other staff that I should buy something in his store, and they were all laughing and giggling, like....what the ? 😂

I've been to the store a few times when Peter was there, there was no pressure at all from him.i found him very down to earth and he was very helpful for what I was looking for.for a guy that played professionally and in the public eye a nice genuine guy

I notice from the team cards that Arthur Beetson was in the Parramatta reserve-grade team. Remember, this is 1980, the year Beetson led Queensland to a 20-10 victory over New South Wales in the first ever State-of-Origin match at Lang Park. This demonstrates, in my view, why Queensland State-of-Origin selectors have always been better than their NSW counterparts. There is NO WAY ON EARTH that NSW selectors would ever pick a reserve-grade player to play Origin. The NSW selection mantra has always been "picking on form". Queensland don't do that. Queensland pick the player they think can do the job. Then they rely on the player to do the job. Remember the year Queensland recalled "Alfie" Langer from English club football to play Origin and he was decisive in winning game 3 that year? NSW would never do that. I bleed blue blood, I can't stand Queensland. But Qld is way better at selecting Origin teams than NSW is, unfortunately.

Furthermore, NSW have recently appointed Laurie Daley as their Origin coach. Absolutely terrible decision. Daley was a great player but he's an awful coach. His cumulative Origin win-loss ratio is atrocious. The first thing Daley said after his recent appointment is that he's going to "pick on form". What a fool. He's basically threatening to dump the incumbent players who magnificently came from behind to win this year's Origin series. He should be sticking with the incumbents, unless they're really playing like mugs. That's what Qld would do. Qld uses the "pick and stick" method and it has served them very well. Seems like NSW will never learn.

Love the passion and agree with you. In the 70s, the incumbents were in the test teams until they played themselves out on form. I recall one year that Eadie was afforded that luxury and he brained it then had a great season at club level.

@@eagleeric2598 I agree with you. Eadie is a good example. The Australian *cricket* team also believes in the Pick & Stick mantra. I remember that they used to say that it's harder to get dumped from the Australian cricket team, than it is to be actually selected in the Australian cricket team. I clearly remember when Greg Chappell had that horrific run of bad form in the 1980s. The Australian cricket selectors didn't dump him. You need to have faith in your players and give those players an opportunity to repay that faith.
