Learned to fly there. Steck Aviation, in the late 80's. Just learned of Mr Steckbauer's passing. Commander USN. Such a great gentleman. God speed.

I got to fly in the C-130 a few times while I was in the Marine Corps. Amazing what that plane can do, built like a tank with wings. VERY loud inside though, in order to speak to the person sitting right next to me I had to scream in their ear. Thanks for the video my friend, great footage of classic aircraft.

I attended this airshow at Brown Airfield in Souther California. I think it was in 1981 (at the hight of the cold war). I saw the massive Russian AN 122 pull an 80 degree bank figure 8 a few hundred feet off the ground. Seeing a plane that size flying like that was unsettling to say the least, because everything I knew about aviation was screaming "That Plane is about to fall out of the sky!" To this day, it was the most audacious bit of flying I've ever seen. Total Yippee-Ki-Yay Mother F'er maneuver. I remember there were tents that had a bunch of rocket and ballistic weapons on display there. Everything from bunker busters to cluster bombs. I also got to sit in the pilot seat of that plan and was astonished to find it was nothing more than a piece of cloth covered styrofoam sitting in an aluminum bucket seat. Seemed totally incongruent with the amount of technology, engineering and resources that went into this plane, they would show so little consideration for the human operator. I understood this was a product of communist ideals, but cutting corners in this area was illogical. The value of any military equipment asset is absolutely dependent upon the interface with the human operator; Overlook this fact in designing and you lower a multi million Ruble aircraft's real value. After a 15 hr. flight to offload invaluable cargo to troops on the ground, a simple thing like a padded seat can make all the difference between success and failure. For me it was a clean window into the fundamental failures of Russia's communist ideology.

Man, that's when airshows were great! Tons of static displays, the aircraft flew close to the crowd, free to attend and you could walk out with bags of posters and freebies.

Oh I was there.. Airspace America.. Me and My buddy were just starting our pilot training and becoming adults.. Good times.. Remember all of the Brown Airshows when the Corsair crashed, some moron ran on the runway when the Concord was landing and had to go around.. I could go on and on... Good times as a San Diego Native.

I was there and it was awesome. Met Pappy Boyington there and the Japanese pilot that shot him down. They became friends.

@3:45 if you look in the distance you'll notice a structure, Rohr industries used that to test jet engines! On a good day the wind would carry the jet sound north to where we lived on Guatay ave....
