It looks magnificent, dare I say "Regal"? 😂😂😂. But VINTAGE??? Come on now, we are all older than 1980 and we're not vintage, are we? Hmm maybe we are. I don't know, but no matter how old I get, I doubt I will ever think of something from the 80's as "vintage". Thanks for a great video! 👍😀😎

I realized a few months ago that I am vintage! I'm really getting into 80's stuff and bringing back so many memories, so that's why I consider it vintage. LOL. Found and subbed to your channel today and will be looking back over your videos soon. Thanks, David

As a 31 year old second daughter, I'm so glad for these videos. My Dad's knees and back and...welll everything, don't work like they used to and I definitely have to stop calling him hoping he can just explain it to me cause the man will drive an hour to come do it himself. Love seeing him, don't want it to have to be because he's doing something I can do on my own if just taught 😅

I am just finishing up a similar Craftsman box, top and bottom with 24 drawers total. I painted them all inside and out. I did not know what I was getting into. About the same surface area as a car!! I used Rustoleum too, but by the quart, thinned with acetone and I used a hardner for added durability, sprayed with a HF purple gun. This was easily a $1,000 paint job if hired out...easily!! I had about $100 in materials and about 25+ hours labor, not including moving tools in and out. Rustoleum gloss black and their gray mixed 50/50 makes a nice dark gray almost identical to the original Craftsman color

Hey Barry, man that tool chest sounds awesome! That is quite some paint job you put on it and I'm sure it is beautiful and better than the factory! I was thinking about doing similar on day. Nice work. I've restored 3 bottoms and 2 tops of these Craftsman cabinets. I use Rustoleum Sunrise red. To me it is a closer match to OE. For the drawers I use Rustoleum Black Stainless Steel paint color. Almost a 100 % match to the grayish color from that period. I also redid an early work bench that had the red drawers with gray sides and switched it to gray drawers and red sides to match. As the OCD kicked in I took 2 small 6 drawer metal cabinets from Ikea and also painted them in the Craftsman colors.
@westhighlandsshop4 ай бұрын
Thank you very much. I have used Sunrise Red in the past, it is similar to the Regal Red. I'm about done with the Regal Red, it takes days and days to dry and I don't get it. You'll see this Friday I use Sunrise on another project and dried solid overnight! I'll have to look into the Black Stainless, really appreciate that tip.

Think the paint is latex paint, which comes off easily with ipa alcohol, and the degreaser was acting with possibly overspray from brake cleaner. I have one too, now in Ireland via England. Purchased by an accountant in Alabama, then shipped to UK in 1995, when he and family moved back. Dry ptfe spray is the best for the slides and it wont stain clothes and stays in place longer than oil or grease

I have older Craftsman boxes that I have covered in a video where you can see the slides are made differently, with a spring release that is much easier to disengage to remove the drawers and slides. Recently at work I looked closely at several Kennedy Tool boxes in our machine shop and they have what looks like exactly the same slides as my older Craftsman boxes, so it appears that Kennedy was making the Craftsman boxes at some point in the past!

Does the spray paint hold up to scratches being a tool box I wouldn’t think it would hold up very well but every video I have seen on toolbox restoration they used spray paint
@westhighlandsshop9 ай бұрын
Well, it does hold up pretty good. I always let mine dry for a few days and then 2-4 coats of clear on top. Once it sets for awhile it does become a durable finish. The cure time is key, it will get hard. Of course it isn't going to stand up the rigors of daily use on a tool box. Mine are being used to store and display my tool collection. I have painted many other items (like my daily use vise) around my shop with rattle cans that get used on a regular basis and it holds up okay. I don't have powder coating or some sort of industrial paint with a spray system. Most people don't and that's why you see so many painting with rattle cans. Good paint inside, not the best delivery system. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
