I bought a used ‘86 foundation with chainsaw case from Guitar Center used $200. Added new pots and replace bridge saddles (one was seized up) It’s my #1 right now.

It takes a 5/16 Gibson truss rod wrench. The knobs on yours are original. 84 was the last year that had the fancy "P" knobs. Rosewood neck isn't really rare but definitely preferred. The maple fretboard ones have all kinda issues.

it takes a Peavey sheet metal formed wrench that was made for this and the T-40/60

it's because you are using the wrong wrench. These used a proprietary Peavey truss rod wrench that is completely different from what you are using.

This look like the original speed knobs (depending on the year). Peavey may still have a database in their website where you can look up the year using the SN. If not, Talkbass probably still has it.

These have interesting pickups, I definitely need to adjust the truss rod, it has been out since I bought it many years ago...

I have the exact same bass. The paint is good so not sure what happened there. It is original and I bought it myself, brand new, in the 80's and still have the receipt. I will have to find it and tell you what year that is. It cost me $800 then and the knobs are original and the fretboard on mine is also rosewood. Mine is still in the original Peavey custom made hard shell case that has seen better days but still protects the bass well. Let me know if you (or anyone) would like me to post the year and other information. I am thinking about selling all of my instruments so this one might be for sale soon.

How much space needs to be between the fretboard and the strings? I have that exact same bass so I’m just curious

I'm not a luthier. But the way I do it is I put a capo on the first fret and press down on the 17th, then I see if a business card can barely fit through the gap between the fret and the string on the first and last string at the 8th fret. If the gap is too big or small, adjust the truss rod accordingly. Then adjust your string saddles heights however you like, as long as your strings don't buzz much when you're playing. Good luck!

what size hex key did you get? Just picked up one of these from a buddy and will be attempting my first restoration. The neck looked like a banana and is in desperate need of an adjustment. Thanks!

@@wolfstarsoundscapes the only correct wrench is the Peavey sheet metal formed wrench-that is why so many of these are now screwed up, chiseled out, etc. -from younger people working on them that are not aware.
