1980's Z-103 FM Cheraw , S.C. and Crackers in Rockingham , N.C.

Z-103 WPDZ was a radio station in Cheraw , SC from July 17, 1979 to Early 1988. The radio station also played live at a locals favorite club called Crackers in Rockingham, NC. Many teenagers and others went there to dance and see live bands that came to this small town. People came from surrounding towns such as Bennettsville , Cheraw , Hamlet , Laurinburg , Wallace , and others to go to the club which was known as " Where The Party People Party " and to go to " Booty's Back Porch ". Z-103 DJs such as Jackson Wilde , Mitch Adams , Mixin' Dixon , and Amos Pigg were some of the names. Some of the shows that came to Crackers were Hank Williams Jr. , Sugar Creek , Nantucket , Mothers Finest , Dr. Hook , The Embers , Chairman of the Board , The Fantastic Shakers , Nitro , Boarderline , Earl Thomas Conley , Lee Greenwood , The Chipendales , Peter Adonis , Ultra Flash , Band of Oz , The Wrestling Bear , Mud Wrestling , Bull Rides , Xanadu , Warhead , George Hatcher Band , Brices Creek , Sidewinder , and Wet Willy. Cool . We sure listened a lot to Z-103 , it was a great station . Jackson Wild , Mixon Dixon , Amos the Pig . Fun times . I grew up in Bennettsville , SC and we listened to it all the time and use to hang out a lot in Cheraw . I remember as a kid , the family going to Rockingham a lot to buy school clothes and such . Bought our TV at JC Penny in Rockingham .

I spent a lot of time in Cheraw when I was in high school in Bennettsville in the 80's . We used to go to the Lumberyard in Cheraw also . I actually liked it better than Crackers , plus it was closer . I dated a few girls there in Cheraw , Chesterfield , and Wallace .

Yes , Crackers and Z-103 is a Flashback ! We used to also go to the Lumberyard in Cheraw , South Carolina . Crackers had a lot of events for a small town club . Thanks for the memories .

I really liked the Lumberyard and it was closer of a drive for me from Bennettsville . I only went to Crackers a couple times .

Thanks for posting some audio from Z103. As I understand, this was Pee Dee’s first FM Top 40 and caused problems for WJMX, which was on AM at the time and they wound up buying 106.3 WOLS so that they could go to FM. Ironically, it would be WJMX that wound up buying WPDZ several years later as they had a much stronger signal than what they had on 106.3.

I had a bunch of cassettes that I recorded from the radio station , so I figured it would be a winner to post it with all the pictures. I know lots of people like me have fond memories of Z-103 playing in the car while we were cruisen with our friends. Of course many of us went to Cracker's in Rockingham and it made a perfect combination. Thanks for watching and be sure to share with your friends.
