My grandmother bought this car for me in 1986, and I drove it for 5 years until a senior citizen wrecked into while it was parked. Definitely one of the most memorable cars that I have owned. The car that I had was alot like this one. Except mine was fully black, tinted windows , with custom glass etching, power windows and locks, manual moon-roof, cassette and EQ.

Tao Tuhao how bad was the wreck?
@taotuhao59695 жыл бұрын
@@Dat1214 Never saw this post, but I will still answer. it completely totaled the car, and it was fresh out of the shop with a complete engine overall. ( This happened after I had owned the car for about 5 years and had driven it all over the US. It was a highly reliable car that I drove from the age of 17 up through nearly completing college. No doubt, lots of memories! I am not kidding, when I admit that I still dream about driving this car, and all of these years later, I am fortunate enough to have owned many nice cars. This one is still an all time favorite, along with a 1973 Mustang Mach One which is a close second.

@Hugh Hefner's Bastard Child I know the feeling brother. I have owned some seriously sweet / very expensive cars in my life and yet I still think / dream about that Supra. In fact, that is why I am here I just google searched it and ended up here again, totally forgetting about my last comment. no doubt, I had many wonderful times in that car and what makes it even more special is that My grandmother was the absolute sweetest woman, truly that I have ever known, and she passed away last year at 87. Once I found my first decent job, I was sure to pay her back. Even though she never asked to be repaid., I just adored her so much and felt bad knowing that as a single widower, she financially struggled to buy that car for me.

I use to have this car back in 93 when I was in college. I had wanted this car since I was a kid and saw it for the first time on a show room floor. So some years later, picked up an 81 model for $1450.00 and had more fun with this car than I had with any other vehicle that I ever owned and I've owned quite a few different vehicles since. I hope to find another. Mine was silver with an all black front bumper.

As I mentioned above, I had almost the identical car, mine was black. Trust me, every kid at my high School envied that car, it was one heck of a nice car back then at those features were indeed rare. Yes, other cars has many of the same features, but we are talking very premium cars. The average car did not have a moonroof, electric windows, etc. This car seemed to to have every feature that you could want, but if was not as fast as the later Supra's

Owned one for about 10 years. Lovely car but due to all of the features/tech it was probably the most troublesome Toyota of the 5 or 6 I ever owned. I considered these Gen 1 Supras to be a "stop-gap/bandaid" fix by Toyota in an attempt to compete with the 280-Z/ZX of the time - while engineers were designing the "real' Gen II Supra. I may be wrong but that was my impression as a "Toyota guy".

If I remember correctly, there were only about 800 made with this paint job. I had a 1981 Toyota Supra in this color combination. However, I had the grey cloth/velour seats. And it was an automatic. I had a bit of trouble with the electrical system. Every time I would turn off the car, and start it up, I would have to redo all my radio presets. Now, the windows would go up and down just fine and the car would start and run, but something was going on there. I really wish I had kept it. Such a fun car to drive!

Toyota took an interesting approach on this car. It seemed that they were trying to make up for the lack of a really sporty engine ( the 4M-E was just the MkII engine with EFI) by taking the interior to a much higher level.

First thing I would do is remove that trailer hitch....this car is a classic in very, VERY good shape. I kind of like the quirky nature of the manual and oddly placed controls. That car (if it works) has automatic AC as well. Notice the temperature slider has numbers on it, not just the usual blue/red slider. My 85 Supra had this same type of control.

Not sure what I was expecting but I didn’t expect to be identical to my first car - an ‘81 Celica GT. Besides the I6 it literally had not one additional option. Actually, come to think of it, mine had manual moonroof and EQ with a far better stereo

It was a fun well handling car that sounded great at high revs and made you want to drive it hard. Make no mistake this was not a slow car when pushed. The head gasket unfortunately warped and at the time the car wasn't in this good of shape and I chose to scrap it. Fun car.

This generation Celica Supra debuted for the 1978 model year. Therefore, 1979 is the second model year, and 1980 would be the third. The last year for this generation was 1981, before its makeover for 1982.

The MA45's were around in Japan in 78. The 2nd gen Celica's started manufacturing and sales in late 77. So you can find rare 77 stamped ones here in Australia. Also, there did exist experimental MA50 and MA55's, which were the first to use IRS. Similar set up to the MA61, so the Mk1 Supra was actually the test vehicle for IRS before the MA61. A friend of mine in Germany recently purchased an RA55 from Japan, which is a 2nd gen GT Celica with the same IRS set up. Just some random useless info.
