An offshore powerboat race montage with a royalty free version of Dueling Banjos dubbed over the sound of the engines. 1980's... I miss you so damn much.

I was there that day. I think at the Rickett's Point end of the course. Ten years old and all I really saw was the spray... :)

'Slingshot' looks like the making of an Apache. Great video presentation and and amazing production quality for 1980. Wonder how they got the footage of the crew through the turn from behind on the hatch. Great stuff! 100 mph was as fast as you could go on the water in 1980, short of a hydroplane. Funny to see Tom Gentry in a basic hull.

I bet. I was only five when this took place. I grew up watching Popeyes, SYSTEMS, Gentry, Jesse James and the Apaches win races. It was amazing to witness this sport back then as they paved the way into the realm of high speeds. 100 mph was not broken in OSR until 1980. It took only 20 years from then to break 200 using the basic hull designs we see in this video.

@@djscott9207 so true how quick 100-200 came around (so it seemed as a spectator) and the advancement in hull/boat design it was a great time 80's through to the early 00's. Watching these days it really makes one realize how incredible they are today. Have a good day

And to think today the market allows people to buy boat's capable of doing 150-170mph for a sunny Sunday. Awesome if ya game

@@khabaaustralia Exactly. Unfortunately, in the last 20 years, it has priced itself outside the realm of possibility for even some fairly deep pocket people. Have a good day, too, and thanks for the response.

It is amazing that the hull designs are still pretty much the same except the steps. Old Don A got the bottom right with 24 degrees. Then came the steps 20 years later.

Good observation. The basic design for both cats and V's was pretty much set in stone by this time with advances and tweaks since then.

DJ Scott yeah my Dad was a pioneer in the step bottoms but ran 24 degree V’s to victory many times. Went to work at Fountain in 1994 and was deeply involved in the “OHIO STEEL” boat that was the very first Fountain step bottom boat. My Dad and Reggie has the sucker hanging at 147MPH after it was dialed in. The boat shattered the record back in 1995.
