Hey man, I watched this when it first went up and didn't comment, but I just showed a few of your clips to my KZbin disliking wife, and they are a hit - wow! Gotta admit though, I think that this has to have been the absolute best time to be in Japan as a gaijin (or even a Japanese for that matter). Love the clothes, the music, the video games... And your video is in pretty good shape for being 21 years old. Thanks for sharing these mate! Peace

What a gem of a video, brings back lot of memories. Great to see those Japanese boys with the Yomiuri Giants caps(very popular baseballteam back then) very cool, always for me the number 1 thing to go to after landing in Japan was the arcade!

80s + Arcade + Japan = win! I really liked this video, it was cool to see Japan in the 80s, plus to see an arcade. I haven't been in a real arcade in so long, miss those good old days.
Luv how you use 80's music as bgm for these old vids. Works perfectly. And the size of your video camera... hahaha! A life-time ago! Although, I gotta tell you, I just saw the very same horse-racing came in an arcade last week - so I guess some things never change! ;-)

@orichic51 This was filmed in Ikebukuro... Back then, Akihabara was strictly an electronics mecca, where all the new gadgits were first put on sale in Japan. Today, "Akiba" has transformed itself into a different mecca of sorts!... Thanks for watching.

@RejectedManiac sorry, this is all I've got. The irony of this is, my buddies and I weren't "gamers" (then or now). And this arcade, with all of the Japanese video games seemed so..."Japanese high tech" then, that we went in purely for the experience and the visuals... Yet, today, this video gets the most interest from gamers who are really into the retro stuff... Glad you enjoyed it.
Now you know how odd it was to be videoing stuff back then, and why we got the reactions we did.

After playing Yakuza 0 (which is set in 1988 Japan) all I can think when seeing 1:43 is "Pocket Circuit!" And yep that was indeed Space Harrier, once again the same Yakuza game made me quite familiar with what the old arcade cabinet looked like (Yakuza is a Sega franchise so they were able to include arcade perfect versions of games like Space Harrier and Out Run).

Great time to have lived in. 90's were a bit better financially (usa) but there was some funky crap starting to happen. My wife's father made millions in osaka during the bubble years and died in 87. @christiantysoe First Street Fighter? You mean Street Fighter 1 (1987) or Street Fighter II: World Warrior (1991)? The first successful competitive fighting game was Data East's Karate Champ (1984). If you are playing it on the NES, then that's not the first version. The first one was the arcade game. The NES version is actually Sakata SAS's port of the first fighting game revision and sequel, Karate Champ: Player vs. Player, also released in 1984.
