Heat up the rubber and a small screw driver to streach the boot over the pins alot cheaper then buying a press

For future reference there is a bolt that secures the upper u-joint to the intermediate shaft. You can simply remove the bolt, tap the u-joint off, then slide the new rubber boot components down over the shaft. This will avoid damaging the cross pin or fracturing he lower end of the intermediate shaft.

Hello there Homing Beacon - Sorry to say this info is not so on all CJs my friend. I have an '83 and it does not have any "bolt" on upper or lower u-joint. Figure 2J-26 on page 871 of the 1982 TSM (Shop Manual) is the reference. The "bolt" does appear in models after 1984... making it easier to get the "boot"on.

The "bolt" does appear on page 863 for column on manual steering too ... Jeep CJs change hands so many times it's hard to know where parts came from ...

The boot will stretch over the pin, a p.i.a., but easier than messing with the pin

Why didn't you just separate the 2 pieces of the shaft? Would have been much easier. Lmao
@TheNightstalker674 жыл бұрын
The two pieces of the shaft do not come apart unless in a collision, there are pins that hold the shaft together. These steering shafts can be a major pain in the rear to come apart, he did a good job.
