Just took my 79 K20 apart have the exact same bearing in it with one bearing missing. Thanks for the info might upgrade to a different steering linkage

Thanks for letting us all know Gary. I still don't know for sure if it was just random, or if certain years had actual bearings. If more people chime in, maybe it will shed more light on the subject.

For what it is worth, my GM parts book for 79-83 "CK" Steering columns both automatic and manual transmissions used part #7805700. In the exploded view diagram it sure looks like what you had in your column.

Maybe they were putting actual bearings in them those 4 years.

Didn't the old jeeps use GM columns?

Possibly. My guess is that back in the day there was probably a company that built columns for several mfgs. But I don't know that for a fact.

@ 8:54 I've tried pressing the bearing into that white collar so many times, nothing I do can get it to push in. I've tried for an hour and somehow you do it in 2 seconds.

They should snap together pretty easily. I wonder if you don't have a component with an issue. Possibly out of spec.

@@SquaredAwayGarage finally whacked it real hard and it snapped together lol. Seems ok, bearing turns nicely and the column doesn’t jiggle anymore. Oh well - appreciate the reply 😀
