I just found one of these 1981 D pennies about an hour ago. I can’t quite tell whether or not it’s got the double punched D, but the reason I picked it up is that it’s gold. Like the whole penny is gold in color. Next to a 2021 D penny, it looks so much different. Can anyone tell me why it’s this color? Are these kind of pennies supposed to be gold? Do they change color over time? Did someone soak it in a chemical to make it gold? I have no idea whether I should hold onto it or not

The penny could have been part of a science activity. If you plate a copper penny with zinc then heat it briefly, the zinc and copper mix forming the alloy brass which looks gold in color.

That means someone cleaned it with vinegar. I made that mistake with a few coins! I tried to clean them and they turned gold
