I remember that Leafs series with the Isles. Isles completely embarrassed them, revenge for 1978.
@bufnyfan12 жыл бұрын
that demented Leafs owner Harold Ballard-said the Islanders weren't "champions" they were "chumpions"--and the Leafs would win the 3 game series--didn't work out that way at all

Awesome. With the way things have gone, it is a welcome sight and a respite for those who have memories of these days, when the NYI ruled the league, Smitty could do no wrong, and their hockey operations were the best in the business.

It is hard to overstate how shocking Edmonton sweeping Montreal was.

You are right.
@GetBenched20104 жыл бұрын
The craziest part is whenever people look back at it now, (Ron McLean I'm looking right at you,) they retcon the narrative and talk about that series like the Oilers were 10,000-1 biggest favorites in NHL history. As though the Habs were a last place team who got in on a technicality.
@lukalavallee40903 жыл бұрын
Not really. Montreal were in full rebuilt at this exact point and Edmonton were on the up, starting realizing having a proper defense is still important even with the Gretzky fraud and the unmatchable attack that flourished around him...for me they are a bit unachieved because they could have got the whole six cup in a row EASILY between 84-90. They beat themselves by choking in their 2 emotional division exits to the Flames. giving an unexpected cup to the Habs and the Flames. Pittsburgh did the same in 1993 by the Isles giving THE MOST Unexpected CUP OF HISTORY to Montreal again. Hockey isnt that predictable and thats the beauty of this sport
@dzanier3 жыл бұрын
@@lukalavallee4090 their other divisional exit was to LA in 82, not Calgary. That was 1986. They also lost to LA without Gretzky in 89.
@timburr4453 Жыл бұрын
@@lukalavallee4090 Montreal in 81 was still a 103 point team while Edm I believe was in the low 70s. Pretty big gap between them. Even though the Habs had the best defensive corps in hockey, the Oilers exposed their goaltending issues. Sevigny was eaten alive, while Moog held down the fort

Edmonton was a very good and very cocky. It took them a few years to grow up
@kellismith43292 жыл бұрын
They had so many talented players at one time, each needed to learn their roles - the islanders always played so smart in playoffs they were truly a machine
@kengelman10116 жыл бұрын
Most amazing part of this series is the NHL's divisional setup back in 1980-81 meant that a New York team had to travel to Edmonton and vice-versa in the second round of the playoffs. Crazy!
@mikel70046 жыл бұрын
That point was played up as I watched the game dvds . I am not sure if I used any of that footage when compiling this video.
@kengelman10116 жыл бұрын
I think you did, actually. Like the Al Arbour interview you included before Game 5 where they had a chance to clinch the series he said: "we love the city of Edmonton but don't care to see it until next season."
@dzanier3 жыл бұрын
That stopped in the 81-82 season.

I look at this video and wonder how the Islanders swept an even better Oilers team in 1983 for the Stanley Cup. The talent level in this 81 series was awesome.

It’s true, the islanders could just suck it up and stick to their plan always - it was great hockey

Mike, you are to be commended for putting this footage together! Highlights of this series have been almost impossible to find, and you have done so. Thanks so much. This was perhaps the most exciting series of the 1981 Playoffs, and neither the NHL nor the TV networks seemed to have made any effort to preserve it for posterity. The same goes for the Oilers Canadiens series this same year. All these games should be available on DVD for everyone to see who likes great hockey and cherishes the history of the game. Where did you find the long lost game 5 of this classic series?
@mikel70045 жыл бұрын
I found a trader who had game 5 from a HNIC master. It's hard to find that quality footage from this era as many of the game videos out there are copies of copies from vcr tapes which drastically lose quality when copied. You can see that on the game 1 and 2 footage I used, not the greatest.

Another fine, production, Mike. One point-while the maple leafs were a shadow of the team that beat the Islanders 1978, I suspect that the New Yorkers still relished revenge, however delayed. Also, how was it that Hector marine he was seemingly playing regular shift in the playoffs? It occurred to me that the Islanders and Oilers would face each other in the playoffs three times in four years. The ‘81 Oilers were not the finished article, but you can clearly see the beginnings of their dynastic teams

James Brock in fact Gretzky was quoted before Game 1 of the series against the Islanders as saying that the Oilers felt great beating “the best team in hockey” which made for some great blackboard material for the Isles.
