mayhem Mike I couldn’t agree with you more! I’m a huge CAT fan but this Detroit is my all time favorite! That sound is just music to my ears! The new diesels are just to darn quiet now a days.

I bought a w 900 new in 1979, with a 8-92, they called it a 440, owner/operator special, , with the stock everything,, it did not sound like that,, it was a deep rumble, I didn't like it,, after 3 or 400, 000 mi, I got rid of it. But at 200,000 I removed the 9A90 injectors and installed 7-100 injectors, that put the power way up , , it had to have been in the neighborhood of 550 hp. Very few trucks in 1981 could stay with it.

AHHHH! This is a real driver here. That's how a Detroit is supposed to sound like!!! Not that snap crackling popping exhaust resonating fart can noise. You don't have to drive it like you stole it or your hair is on fire. That's for idiot assholes that have something to prove because they are technically not fit to drive a truck. Yeah! I said it!!! My uncle owned a Detroit in the early 80's Ford LNT 9000 and there wasn't a drop of oil on the engine anywhere. The truck always looked like it came out of the showroom on Monday morning and stayed like that all week long. I remember that sweet sound like it was yesterday. I really loved that rolling idle at 3am during the winter months up here in south western Ontario Canada even though the block heater was plugged in. I thought it was just wanting to stall out. It was like music to my ears.

You are so right on. I drove one as well and this fellow is driving it right. Too many think hot rodding it to the governor and shifting with Jake's to be what proves them a driver. Listen to this fellow drive, that is how a good, actually great driver, does his job. Thanks for sharing this video! Loved finally hearing this engine run right, made for a lot of smiles and good memories! And, your comment about oil leakage is what I found as well. The Detroits I ran were always clean with minimal oil usage. They were great engines! As for oil leakers, anyone remember the Cummins engines BEFORE dual press fit liners? Expect major oil seeping/leaks from the head gaskets down. Wow they were bad. Granted, that was finally remedied when the liners were given an upper and lower press fit. But the same people that claim Detroits to be leakers never mention the worse problem Cummins had.

What’s your operational range here, sounds lower (and better) than most videos I watch of the 8V92 being driven. Also, what grade are you climbing here? She’s steady up to 30mph with only 30,000lbs on.
@tomromanski79254 ай бұрын
GVW is like 85k lbs. Steady climbing in like 6th high, which is like 9th gear in a 13 spd. RPMs are around 15-1600. Good steady rpm for an 8v92. Not sure of grade, but I would say an avg hill, not crazy steep.

Great entertainment. I used to drive the same model/year tandem dumptruck with an original 435x892 w/15 spd. Cept' the truck I drove had the white 3 spoke "retro" looking steering wheel. Steel dash, (not wood grain) painted bland grey, air wipers. Basically it was a log hauling tractor that had the bare minimum amenities to do the job. But lets see your shifting prowess going up a hill loaded and have to lose 3~5 gears...foot on the rug. That would be highly entertaining to hear the engine pull down from the hill.

I just bought this truck over the winter. 600000 original miles, was a straight job horse hauler that was ordered with every option. the guy i bought it from shortened the frame and made it a tractor.has passenger and driver air power windows and a/c, full gauges, and 8 bag air ride. everything works. it's a lot of fun to drive and you just can't beat the music it makes
@iBackshift8 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the buy. A lot of 8v92 fans on utube there bud. Hope to see a vid one day of the tractor alone, doing a walk around, (show us your girl') hood closed then hood open...mebbe engine idling? Yeah "music"...Loaded out of the pit 2nd gear, cross the tracks, down the hill, split the stick, slide er' in 6th, roll onto the highway and black smoke on the rug climbin nipigon river hill at 1750 for 1/2 a mile. Loved hearing the engine blower singing with the turbo vocals in the background sing away. haha
