I so remember this game as a 16 year old central PA kid. My dad was so mad when Nebraska scored he went outside and started working on the old 67 LTD and changing the oil. I sat and watched as Penn State went down the field and cringed on that 4th down play. After the Bowman TD, I ran outside out screamed Penn State won and my Dad looked at me like I was crazy and ran in the house. I will never forget those moments....

I went to that game. Obviously it was a great result for Penn State fans, and we students hadn’t had enough. We went back to the dorms and watched it again on TV….. whatever school you go to, when your team comes out on top… well, you know what I mean - college football is magical. We Americans never lose a connection to our schools, and following sports from your school is a big reason. That’s why almost 40years later I post this message.

Im not a fan of either team but I remember watching this game from start to finish. Im an Oklahoma fan thus I hated Nebraska. I know many Husker fans will disagree with me but I feel the 82 and 83 teams were the best Husker teams ever even over the 90 teams that brought Osborne his titles. And I still say Turner Gill was the best Nebraska QB. I give him a slight edge over Tommie Frasier because Gill could pass and was every bit the option QB Frasier was. The Rozier, Craig , Gill backfield with Fryer as receiver was insane. Just by bad luck did Nebraska not break through in 82 or 83. They were scary good. Penn State was also transforming in this time opening up the passing game. Blackldge and Warner were both studs and the Penn State receiving core group here was vastly underrated. Classic, classic game. Side note I sure do miss Gary Bender calling games for CBS both in football and basketball. One of my absolute favorites and I think he was the best guy who could do either football or basketball. May not have been the best for football or basketball exclusively but I still say his ability to be very good at both play by play was a unique skill set that Ive never seen matched.

This 1982 Nebraska team gets overshadowed by the 83 team. This team was just slightly weaker offensively but much better defensively. Both years they only only one game on the road to the eventual national champ by a combined 4 points. Dam.

For all the Nebraska fans whining about the one or two questionable calls at the end, I grant that sideline catch looks pretty doubtful. The endzone catch looks pretty clearly a catch but it's awful close. But here's the problem, you all ignore the calls that went in your favor. They missed a fumble Penn State recovered near the start and worse was the fumble called against Penn State in the 3rd quarter where it clearly was not a catch and fumble, he never had possession. You can't cherrypick. Calls come and go for both teams, especially back then with no replay.

Whatever helps you sleep at night bud. Face it, you got CLOBBERED by a bad Alabama team the next game, 42-21. That was Bear's final team that was 8-4. Combine that with this "should have lost" game and it's hard for a lot of fans to see 1982 Penn State as any kind of a 10-2 national champion. You kind of understand that, right? Face it, PSUs best team was 1994. That one never got the shot at Nebraska, who passed them in the rankings after the two games vs Indiana and Illinois finished closer than many would have liked. Any chance that was a MAKE UP CALL for this game here? Giving NU a shot when they and Osborne got robbed here? Anyway.....this PSU team basically had two true defeats and their '86 team did nothing but watch Miami turn it over about seven times to only finally win 14-10. It too, was a win but they looked far from the best team that night. (was it like 450 yards to about 145 that night or what? geez!) Meanwhile, that 1994 team was stuck playing the Ducks in a bad Rose Bowl which was a nice bowl game for Penn State but hardly the game they really wanted that year. Even a lesser Miami lead Nebraska that year 17-7 for 3 quarters in that Orange Bowl. I think PSU has a good chance to put up points in that one if they had the shot at NU. They put up fifty or more on a bunch of teams - over 60 on the Buckeyes?!?! Again, another team in history who is left to wonder what could have been?

Thanks for posting. A fantastic game, although sadly all anyone remembers is the McCloskey play. Listen ... with the camera angles available, in 1980s film quality, I don't know how anyone could say whether or not that call was right. I can't tell. Anyone who says they can tell "for sure" that Nebraska was robbed is crazy. It's impossible to tell if McCloskey drug his left foot or not. Plus, they could have stopped Kenny Jackson on 4th down before that. They didn't. And Kerry Shawley below me is correct; PSU let a lot more opportunities go than Nebraska did. They won anyway because they were the superior team.
