I just picked up a 1980 Johnson 25 hp with electric start. I got it running today with the help of your carb video. The only way I get higher rpm is moving the linkage with my hand. The tiller handle and throttle are stiff as hell. I know nothing about these but will soon from your videos. I twist the throttle and it doesn't rev up. You rock! I'd be proud to buy you a beer. Thanks for the knowledge.

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 My tiller handle only turns far enough to advance the timing. It doesn't go far enough to open butterfly in carb. I will go through all your videos to maybe find a solution. The local boat shop wanted $300 to put a carb kit in. Ha ha ha screw them! It was simple to clean and now at least runs.

@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The timing is set with the marks on the throttle cam and cam follower or "roller". The carb butterfly needs to start opening just as the roller is between the 2 marks on the cam. Check out the 9.9/15 hp sections at leeroysramblings.com, that's where I learned everything. I think the outboard was feeling the chill too. It had the hippy, hippy, sneazy shakes. Was it the cold or the motor mounts? Me thinks the motor mounts. The outboard is from either Wisconsin or Ontario so it must not mind the cold as much as the mechanic. I don’t usually bother with those idle screws. It’s common to see them bent. I normally turn them out and use the throttle to control the idle speed. And doing it that way has the added benefit of being able to use the twist throttle to shut the outboard off. Another good one - always entertaining.

Hey. I guess you'll have to put it in gear or disconnect the shift linkage to get the plate to full throttle position on a 25. Or maybe pull the shift lock arm back.? Anyway. There has to be some way to hold the plate at WOT position against the spark adjusting screw/stop. Hard to say without looking at it. If you cant figure it out, get someone to hold it while you hit it with the timing light. Here's the procedure if you didn't look it up already. Great videos man. Thanks for posting these. I’ve just bought a small skiff with a 1985 Johnson 25hp E25TECOS. It runs really good, except at WOT. However, if I pump the fuel ball it runs fine. I’m guessing the fuel pump, but the guy said he rebuilt it 3 years ago. He also said he couldn’t remember if the carb had ever been rebuilt. Could a carb issue also be cured by pumping the fuel ball? Could timing be off just a little and cause the same thing? Last thing, this is a 14ft skiff. The guy installed a 12 gallon tank in the front of the skiff and ran hose to the back, and put in a fuel water separator before the fuel ball. It seems to get fuel just fine, but could that be too much distance for that little fuel pump? Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. 3 years is a long time. And yes, pumping the primer to recover could be a pump issue. I would just go back to basics and pull the carb off and clean/check the high speed orifice/jet in the bowl and check the float and needle and replace if need be. Then you'll have piece of mind and know everything is good. Same with the pump, rebuild or just replace. You can get pumps and rebuild kits on ebay pretty cheap but beware of the cheap chinese carb kits, they're junk! And check all the fuel line connections (air leaks) from the tank back, make sure the tank vent is open. I don't really know if having that much distance with the tank makes a difference or not. Check your throttle linkage settings and timing marks on the cam, the butterfly should just start to open as the cam follower or roller is between the 2 marks, at wide open throttle the butterfly should be perfectly horizontal, the roll pin on the butterfly shaft should be perfectly vertical. Some carbs will stop opening at WOT some dont depending on the model. If the butterfly goes past perfect horizontal position it will sputter at high speed. Check out my carb cleaning video if need be. Thanks again & Stay tuned ! @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 thanks for the quick reply. I will check the carb linkage. I will say that when you go from zero to WOT, the cam and carb seem to be in sync, but at WOT the cam stops and the carb continues to open and the cam roller comes off of the cam and goes forward. Does that sound correct? Also, just before the engine stalls at WOT, it revs up, indicating to me a lean situation. The carb is running so well I hate to take it apart if that isn’t it. It idles and runs at all speeds perfect except WOT. I’m wondering if the timing and carb setting isn’t perfect.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
@@rjyoungjr yes. thats normal on the linkage, check the butterfly position at wot, takes a minute . but the rev before it stalls isn't. something weird is going on. float position/needle sticking? there is no lean/rich settings at high speed only at idle/slow speed setting on the needle adjustment. high speed orifice/jet, butterfly position and linkage control the fuel/air mixture. you'll have to go through it. welcome to outboard repair 101.
@rjyoungjr
@rjyoungjr 3 жыл бұрын
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 thanks. I was thinking maybe it was going lean because it was starving for fuel until I pumped the ball. I’ll check the carb butterfly. That could be a potential issue. It only does it when I go the last 1/8 inch turn on the throttle. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll clean the carb and check the fuel pump.

Hey. I would stuff a rag in the carb and try not to get it wet under the flywheel. I usually take the leaf blower and dry them off afterward. Never had a problem. Thanks again !

Someone told me that the screw on the lower side was to tighten up the steering. My motor was moving too easy,side to side and it chopped my trash can that was used to run it in.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1

Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The screw I'm referring to has nothing to do with steering tension or the friction block adjustment. The screw I'm adjusting is the idle stop screw. Go to marineengine.com and look up your year/model. Check the schematics for what you're looking for to tighten up your steering! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

My old 82 Johnson is a reliable old girl, till my idle done the same, even locked me out of neutral it got that far But after seeing this it’s back to start first pull every go But how did you get a starter motor in there haha I need to do the same on mine as it’s hard to get up and pull her from my throne seat

Hey Adam. Thanks for tuning in. You'll need the starter bracket, motor and solenoid for your year/model. Find the part numbers at marineengine.com and search ebay for a good used one. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

In the "start position" should the cam roller be between the marks? Do i need to give it a little throttle or is the choke enough to start it? I do have some play in my throttle control cable like this motor had, does it just need to be cleaned? 78 25hp Johnson. Thank you and you make working on these things seem much less intimidating.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. In neutral, the ignition plate will hit a stopping point on the plate when you advance the throttle handle. That's start position, normally the choke should be closed on a cold start. When it starts, open the choke, this needs to be done quickly or it will flood and die. After the motor starts, return the throttle handle to a smooth idle position. If it looks like it needs to be cleaned, clean it! A clean Johnson is a happy Johnson! Hahaha Thanks again & Stay tuned !

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 thank you so much! I have a throttle control so ill make note of that. I changed spark plugs and cleaned the carb today. I think I was running rich because the idle pin was out 2.5 turns. I bought the motor 2nd hand and realized today that they had 2 different spark plugs. I was going to run non-ethanol gas with 2 stroke oil.....does gas quality actually matter in these older motors? Cheers!
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 2 жыл бұрын
@@mobando45 I've never tested the different fuels in a 2 stroke outboard. But I do use the non-ethanol in my 4 stroke stuff like my pressure washer, because it will sit for long periods of time and the ethanol will gum up and cause problems, even eat the carb bowl up. But with a 2 stroke I see this happening less, or not at all because of the oil being mixed with the gas. I'm sure these old outboards have had many a gallon of ethanol run through them. If you do try testing them let me know if there's a difference. Thanks again !

Ok i got a 35hp from 1980 and it have backfire and i can only full gas on the choke do i need to take the carb off? I already cleaned it
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. A true backfire usually means the plug wires are crossed, or the wiring is backwards. Check your wiring. If its not a real backfire, its usually called a "lean sneeze", it's running too lean, to much fuel. If it only runs with it choked, then its not pulling enough fuel through the idle/slow speed circuit and it needs cleaned. There are small holes inside the top of the carb just behind the butterfly. If they're clogged it wont idle. Check out the new video I just posted on the 89 25hp johnson tracker. I go over how to clean them in the video. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

Obi wan, I'm thinking about replacing my '76 25hp with a 15 to get better performance trolling. This is on a 16' starcraft utility boat. Should I be able to tune my 25hp to run well enough at closed throttle that I can troll reliably or do you think I should go to a smaller motor? I'm also thinking about pulling the trigger on a new 4 stroke but want to exhaust other options first.
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1
@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 3 жыл бұрын
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Use the Force! Hahaha. I personally would stay with the 25 especially on a 16' boat. I would think the smaller motor would have to work a little harder depending on the load. You should be able to get what you want from the 25, the 70's 25's were light in weight and had the guts to push a load around. Don't forget to "run it" every once in a while, while trolling to blow out the carbon build up. You will like the 4 stroke because they are so quiet while trolling, you dont even know they're running. If you get one, you may want to go with a used one. A lot of people buy them and end up hating them and go back to their 2 stroke. Let the Force guide you. Hahaha check this out just for laffs, kzbin.info/www/bejne/p37cloaJarB3hNk. Thanks again & Stay tuned !

The only really, really bad things about a 1982 motor was the rotten wire harnesses. They are very bad. They need to be replaced in almost every instance. This was not true of just OMC motors; it was also true of Mercury motors. Whomever the supplier was, he was sold a bill of goods with regard to the quality of the wire material he used to make the harnesses. Don't hesitate to buy a 1982 motor. Just figure in the added cost of a new wiring harness............ BTW: The replacement harnesses from the OEM dealers are fine.

Hey. Sounds good! 1st thing check the compression, if it's good the rest is just a pain in the azz. Save yourself some money and do the work yourself. They're not that difficult and you need to know your motor. Not to many places know how to work on these older motors. I hear it all the time. Curious to know how it goes.
