I had a new 83 DeVille diesel. It was beyond slow. Okay in town, but useless on the highway. Pray for no hills.

Whenever I think my '82 Firebird 305 auto is slow, I remember there's cars like this, and then there's cars that are somehow even slower

Try to find a 1982 camaro. 2.5 4 cylinder coupled to the 3 speed auto. . The chevy citation was faster. Yeah same drivetrain but the citation was way lighter. Lol.

The slowness was worth it for the extra MPGs. The 4.1L V8 gas engine was originally rated at 14 city 19 highway 16 combined average. The 5.7 V8 diesel was originally rated at 23 city 37 highway 27 combined average. I'd like to hear from someone who actually owns the diesel if that rating is accurate though. I'm sure it gets much better fuel mileage than the gas engine but 37mph highway seems pretty high. If it really got that much I'd find one and daily drive it!
@algernonilfracombe6 ай бұрын
No offence but I bet Cadillac buyers could shell out for gas money. Shame both the 4.1 and 5.7 diesel were pretty crappy in terms of reliability. IMO they should have tried the V6 turbo from Buick instead

Haha, that's pretty slow but it would be much peppier with a 4 or 5 speed manual. It's not as bad as I thought anyway. Must be damn nice to drive anyhow! Hey if I could I would chuck in an ZF8 auto for shits and giggles and see how much it improves driveability and acceleration. :D I'm pretty sure this engine will run on anything liquid, greasy and flammable you feed it? :)

Probably weakened compression.
@BoysToysAndAFarm11 ай бұрын
I am actually going to test compression, curious how much it's lost. When I had the oil pan off the cross hatching in the cylinders looked perfect so I suspect the engine is healthy, the transmission on the other hand...
@jamesfrench729911 ай бұрын
At least it works. Well in front of many cars. I read they weren't designed as a diesel. They converted a gasoline motor to run as a diesel. That was a mistake.

350 diesel?
@tehagent132111 ай бұрын
They were a huge failure and set back diesels in the US by 20+ years. They basically tried to make a normal 350 block and heads do diesel duty. The biggest issue was the head gaskets blowing but they also had other issues. Once the news was out that diesels were bad, it was game over until German Autos came across sporting actual diesel engine designs. I honestly feel like we're still set back - turbo diesel was/is a great way to get plenty of torque and also have great economy at cruising speeds. Unfortunately, the USA is stuck on massive horsepower numbers and diesels typically spin low RPM, meaning low HP numbers despite insane torque figures.

@petepeterson533711 ай бұрын
Ya gotta manually hold it in lower gears and spin the engine up. The DX block in that '82 will survive the abuse and you will find untapped horsepower. Don't do it all the time, though I did and never had a bottom end failure. By 1982, the real weakness was the head gasket, the over-rated stanidyne injection pump, and the lockup converter. Oh yeah, the water pump has special small blades.... Do yourself a favor and drill a small hole in the thermostat so it can know how hot the water in the engine is so it doesn't need to slam open. This in some vehicles will prevent the slamming open of the thermostat once the head temps overshoot resulting in warped heads due to flash cooling.
