Yes - I think this is when I realised that Cram would be a worthy runner next to coe and ovett in terms of keeping the middle distance flag flying for britain while those 2 legends recovered from illness/injury.

Cram shows real balls here. Instinctive tactics, and if they weren't optimal, they were effective - he won the race. Cram always ran the big finals with a cool head and effective tactics to suit his condition at the time. Nobody likes a hard finish from 600 out except El Guerrouj. It was unfortunate for Williamson, he was running well enough in 82 to have won a medal here.

I disagree Re: "Cram always ran the big finals with a cool head and effective tactics to suit his condition at the time. "--he did exactly this when healthy and confident; when unsure of his condition as in the 87 WCs, for example, he ran very foolishly.

@@WithBACON Nobody was going to beat Bile that day but Cram, in hindsight, might have got silver or bronze had he not gone all in 500m from home.

Actually - Cram could have won it without that long run for home - he was capable of a very fast last 300 off a slow pace - there was no need for those heroics - but it was exciting at the time.
