When you pull the Premium Sound "knob" out, it turns on the separate power amplifier. Why anyone would leave it off and prefer reduced sound quality boggles the mind. The quadrasonic 8 track was still available through a good chunk of 1982, but when the radios changed to the smaller DIN size on the cars built late within the year, the quadrasonic was gone. An 8 track player was still available, but now changed to stereo only. That system was really the first example of a car manufacturer putting in an effort of really upgrading the speakers and the amplification. I believe Motorola was involved. This was followed with GM collaborating with Bose, with those systems first appearing in model year 1983.
