Since I am an almost 60 year continuous Cadilliac owner, I prefer the Brougham. However, I also a huge fan of Lincolns. The only thing I would have changed about the Lincoln is the taillights. Same here. I was in high school during the '80s and I always loved this body style of Lincoln and I always wanted one. I didn't like the change they did in 1990 at first, mostly because I LOVED this style above. I eventually came to love the redesign, but this one here is my favorite. I'd still love to have one. On this particular one I would prefer it to have had navy like the Cadillac, but the red is nice. If we could only have beautiful, large cars like this again. I'd give up my truck and my SUV for it!

My uncle drove his 83 Lincoln town car as a limo for 12 hours a day, then his associate would drive it 12 hours on the night shift. No rest for 6 days straight, with regular maintenance it went over a million miles and he sold it for $3500 in excellent condition

The Lincolns back then actually had better engines than the Cadillac. I believe it that it went a Million Miles! I worked for a Limo Company too and one of the cars was a not too sure of the year but probably a early 2000's Lincoln Town Car Limo! It had over 500k that's 500 thousand miles with nothing done to the engine except changing the oil the transmission though I believe was on its 3rd transmission rebuilt I believe.

@TheArkDoc3 ай бұрын
I owned one of each (1987 TC signature, and 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham). Just from my experience, I think you're correct--the Lincoln was built better and far more reliable.. My caddy had better leather than a standard town car, but aside from a few material choices, the Lincoln was absolutely reliable--never an issue. The Caddy was not as reliable, and it developed rattles and squeaks by 50K miles that my Lincoln didn't have at 143K when I sold it. I didn't have many issues with the Cadillac, but it left me stranded a couple of time and needed more repairs along the way. I was so frustrated, I traded it off for the TC. The best car I has from that era was a 1981 Mark VI Continental 4 door. Emilio Pucci. I sold it at 155K miles after driving it for 15 years... I would take it over either of these. Goodness. that was a good car, and the interior was superior to anything caddy produced in the 1980s, and much higher quality than my Town Car. I shed a tear when the new owner drove it away. FYI, the most unreliable car i ever owned was a 1981 Caddy Sedan Deville 8-6-4. The only car I traded off early. Good car, garbage engine.
@gsm199113 ай бұрын
@@TheArkDoc besides not being reliable as Cadillacs were known for during the 1980s, what do you think caused the build quality to be superior in the Lincoln compared to the Cadillac? Did Cadillac rust faster or have more structural issues? I’m just curious because because I’m considering this era.

On the town car, the stainless rocker trim was not an option, but was an indicator of trim levels. I was so intrigued that when you rolled down the window the vent window came down first then the actual window. Just too cool. I'm sure it was born out of an era when many people smoked, but, that Lincoln held onto it for so long was nostalgic and unique. Same with the thermometer on the mirror; sort of classic elegance even though there was another option by then (digital). Somehow the digital would seem to make these cars less classy. I love both. I’ve always wanted an 80’s Lincoln Towncar. I do believe 89 was probably the best year for the 80’s Lincoln Towncar, however several things annoy me; I never liked the rear end tail light appearance when they made the change in 85 I think and also why did they not have a digital climate control, still using the sliders. I had friends who had 91 Cadillac Brougham’s, I loved those too, they felt bigger and the classic style was still amazing. Tough choice to make now, both amazing in their own rights.
@jay2419714 ай бұрын
I hear you on the climate control being digital, but to me, the more analog or pre-digital version made it feel more classic in some way. I also like the thermometer on the driver-side mirror. I think I would choose it over the digital for its appeal and nod to nostalgia and yesteryear. I also love the vent windows on these. . . I agree with you on the tail light appearance. I think they could have made a change when they did, but made them a little more classy than simply rounded and slapped-on like they tend to appear. I always wanted an '80s Town Car too. One thing that the 1989 and late 1988 Chrysler Fifth Avenue had that was unavailable in both the Cadillac and the Lincoln was a driver's side airbag. I also preferred the analog gauge cluster of the Chrysler to the digital readout on the other vehicles. The Fifth Avenue was just as comfortable as the Cadillac and the Lincoln; it's too bad that Chrysler saw fit to end production of their rear drive models after the 1989 model year. The front drive New Yorkers and Imperials were nice-looking and well-appointed, but they really weren't comparable to the Cadillac Brougham or the Lincoln Town Car.

Interestingly, my father, a transmission rebuilder and master mechanic always complained about not liking the way 'Ford brakes' felt. 😂 On a long haul highway drive, I think the Cadillac is nearly impossible to beat, from a comfort perspective. Also, I think the Lincoln is perhaps more technologically more advanced, but I remember the Cadillacs having automatic level ride. Anthony on that Lincoln Town Car when you're showing the window door locks and seat controls, one thing many people don't know is that little space at the end of the plate for the windows where there's nothing there was for the seat memory option that was spec'ed for these cars but never implemented. If you remove that switch bezel from the door and turn it upside down you will see in that empty space at the end of the bezel there's two screw slots and a mounting Square for the seat memory switch which for some reason never made it to production. Just an interesting footnote to those cars. Of another interesting note if you take a seat memory switch from any 90's Ford it fits into that slot perfectly and bolts right up

Papa Bear, I just have to agree with you on your choice, but I can’t keep my eyes of of either ones!

Lincoln had the better motor and it was a tougher car. But I would like a catty to go with my 88 Lincoln town car. I'm from the Deep South and I have Italian Heritage so both of these cars are a go for me.

which one rides smoother between these two boats ?
@AlexanderCrump2 ай бұрын
I think the Ford full-sized cars generally rode softer/smoother than the GMs. They definitely were more floaty and boat-like, which you want in a luxury car like this.

Love the montage at the end! If only they still made cars this beautiful.

If you ever do, you will love it. I had the pleasure of renting a brand new one in 1989 and I think it's the best car I've ever driven to this day. Nothing since has even come close. Everything worked flawlessly and the engine ran so well.

I've always liked the Lincoln brand. Even tho I own a Cadillac I've always been a Ford guy and Lincoln was that luxury car that wowed people. The Lincoln always seemed to be ahead of the times with all the up to date accessories and the smooth ride. I think the Lincoln has the better look and the smoother ride.

I would love either; however, there's just something special about the Cadillac. Even more so, should have been ordered with the 350.

In your Rational Mind, You'll Choose the Cadillac. The Cadillac Will Always Be #1. That's why they are still being Manufactured. What Happened to the Lincoln Continental??? Good Question ⁉️ The choice is MADE""PaulGee" The Speculation is Over...😅😅

Both beauties, I think the Caddy is a bit more elegant looking

Very very close, they are both excellent choices, I have to go with the Lincoln, the front of it looks a little better and I like the fact it kept its looks of the 1970s Lincoln’s, just slightly smaller.

When I see these cars, I see how beautiful the days of the eighties were, and I prefer the Cadillac because it was with my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law, and it was the height of luxury and beauty, and the Lincoln was also wonderful.

I'm from west Michigan, and a GM guy from birth. I had an 89 Lincoln town car, white exterior, white leather seats, and thick blue carpet. I absolutely loved driving that car. My all time favorites are the late 70's through late 80's olds delta 88 and 98. The best cars for long trips, nothing beats the full size cars with a small block chevy or ford. With nice long bench seats for a stretched out nap.

I owned both (1987 Lincoln TC, 1983 Caddy Fleetwood Brougham), and I would take the Lincoln everyday and twice on Sunday. It was dramatically more reliable. I think they are both beautiful, but Lincoln was a much, MUCH better car.

I own a 1982 Lincoln Town Car with a 302 engine and standard trim, but even with just the standard trim, it's still so beautiful. To me, both of these cars are just beautiful, and if I had the choice between them, I'd take both.

In terms of American cars, my parents were Ford people so I always liked the Lincoln, besides the Lincoln was better built and more reliable

Love 'em both. I'm a Ford guy overall, but it's hard to beat the styling of that Cadillac. That multiport 5.0L in the Lincoln was definitely ahead of its time though. I'd be delighted to have either sittin' in my garage though.
