This was probably the height of his addiction. A lot of people don't realize he (sort of) cleaned up later in life. He was going through methadone treatment for the last years of his life. His swedish gf said he would sometimes pretend to be stoned on stage bc fans wanted it. If you listen to some of his life stuff from '90/91 it is significantly tighter. Live and Wasted 1990, and Live in Osaka '91 are better than any Heartbreakers live albums for this reason. RIP to Johnny, Walter, the whole gang.

Better than any HB live performance from 1980-1984 probably, because after that, he got kinda serious again (Dead or Alive show, reunion with Jerry and Arthur), but this is his worst era by far: the infamous "needle in the hat" era like on the cover of "In Cold Blood"

dude going to a methadone clinic doesnt mean he cleaned up - there are plenty of people who trade or sell their methadone/suboxone and buy dope with the money. ive literally seen and done it myself. he didnt pretend shit it doesnt matter though, none of that has anything to do with how great his and the heartbreakers music is

I saw Johnny Thunders playing a small, nothing club in Newport, Rhode Island in 1982 or 1983. He was doing the same mouth-probing speedball thing only he was even less coherent. The crowd stopped watching and emptied the small room with the stage. Most didn't know who he was or even the NY Dolls which shows how poor the booking was. I stayed watching along with about 5 others (yes 5). Suddenly he launched into a Wipeout type guitar riff that was really hot, there was some talent in there still.

Great quality video. Never seen this one before. It is not from 1982 though. Since Billy Rogers is playing drums, this would be between 1980 and no later than 1984. The Heartbreaker's played CBGB's one time between that date span. This show was on January 8, 1983. I have the Village Voice ad to prove it. That was the last time JT officially played CB's. He of course jumped on stage with the Waldos and The Senders a few times though.

Did Walter Lure sing this on the album too or is he just filling in cause Johnny is fuckin shot? I guess he probably must cause it sounds like the same. I don't think Walter gets nearly enough credit for the Heartbreakers. He wrote the music for "Love Comes In Spurts" which later became "One Track Mind" which is IMO one of their best songs and as you can see in this video he was the guy who apparently kept it together when Johnny was too fucked up to do shit on his own. Johnny is a great personality and a classic rocker but he couldn't have truly sustained a band on his own in my opinion.

pahlie39 Never heard of that ...I used to shoot up in the 70's...it seems John had smack laced with cyanide or speed...a junky's nightmare....
@geoffwright12559 жыл бұрын
***** Dude, if it was laced with cyanide he'd croak! I was on the spike for 35 years and believe me any opiate / opioid mixed with speed (used to be called speedballs) is a junkie's dream - coupla phi amps + 6 dex crushed and filtered was the hit of choice of many of my contemporaries. I saw the Heartbreakers 8 times from '77 onwards and JT always worked his mouth a lot, pouting and snarling. He does look like one sick puppy here tho - I know for a fact he was into sniffin' glue, so much so that Peter Perrett of The Only Ones played a lot of his guitar parts on So Alone cos they couldn't get JT out of the studio toilet. But from the sweats and jaw grinding, I reckon he'd had a snowball (coke + smack cocktail). I'm glad to say I knocked all that shit on the head years ago. Glamorous? Noooo, just plain desperado self-destructive!
@PAULLONDEN9 жыл бұрын
Geoff Wright Ok..then...I shouldn't generalize just because I myself wasn't a speed fan; and rather went for the coma effect. Thunders and Sid Vicious are perfect poster boys for not to use smack. I always used it in comfortable surroundings, flowing music a good drink etc. None of that sticky sweating and scratching for me. That's why it was so difficult to knock it. Especially in some European countries where they more or less subsidised drug use.That's history though, now they escort the remnants of those days to the last stop.I've got no regrets though.
@MarkGelderland8 жыл бұрын
+Geoff Wright That's funny because in the eighties we called coke+smack a speedball, dope mixed with amphetamines wasn't popular at all. You get all itchy and shit. Snowballing on the other hand is something quite different xD
