The great Fred Dean was great in this game. Took Covid to stop him. Rest in peace, Mr.Dean. You were a joy to watch.

The very next season the 49ers would blast the Vikings 51-7 at Candlestick.

It happened in the season's next-to-last game. But the 1984 49ers were Super Bowl champions, whereas the Vikings were among the NFL's worst teams.

Yes, this was a Thursday night game or MNF special in the second week of the 1983 season. This was just the second season that the Vikings played indoors at the new Metrodome after they moved from The MET in Bloomington after the 1981 season.

This was a Thursday night special on ABC as ABC usually had a Thursday night game in September around this era as I remember a couple of seasons later when the McMahon game happened at the Metrodome for the '85 Bears. This was just the second season of the new Metrodome in Minneapolis.

The thing that always stood out to me for QBs back then was the amount of ints they threw as compared to tds
@autodidacticprofessor869
@autodidacticprofessor869 4 жыл бұрын
@George Washington The fact that DB's can't contact WR's after 5 yards nowadays is a huge reason. This is why I don't generally compare QB's from this era with guys like Tom Brady because the game is so different and the refs were definitely not protecting QB's back in these days.
@johnre5342

@@autodidacticprofessor869 also qbs didn’t check down as much as they do now. Now they throw a lot of 5 yd passes.

1:00:30 - 99 times out of 100, when a bad snap hits the turf before it reaches the punter, it benefits the opposing team. But in this case it had the opposite effect. This was one of those strange nights when practically everything that could go right (if you're the 49ers) did go right
@robertmayer7232

Yep. But never forget, it's the intense practice and conditioning - the preparation - that takes advantage of those lucky opportunities. Luck and "things just going their way" are not the main factors. It's the readiness to seize those opportunities and make the most of them..

@Lee Shackelford I was serving a sentence aboard a prison galley, (a.k.a. US coast guard high endurance cutter) We were in home port having just returned from our 90 day rotation on Alaska fisheries patrol, and I watched it by ALL myself on the smaller TV in the auxiliary lounge. This '83 season to date has been the only Forty Niner campaign that I saw every game including pre season and post season. That's why '83 is still my favorite all time team.

Before Thursday night games became a weekly thing, the NFL usually scheduled a couple of them each year, just to give fans and ABC extra football to watch.

Thats twice we all got screwed the raiders vs 49ers and raiders vs dallas these would a been 2 of the beat superbowls ever 49ers would a matches up better against the raiders the redakins had already set gave raiders the blueprint anf specific charlie sumner/jack squirek interception play by punking the raiders in a early regular season game that year marcus allen was injured in that game then in the superbowl john riggins was too weak from the flu to play a simple reversal of fortunes costing each team a gain even though 49ers would match up better agaist raiders than redskins i think with raiders defense peakiing that year joe montana second superbowl was his first superbowl loss he couldn't avoid interceptions any better than joe thiesman against the lester hayes toney haynes best all time corner tanden montana aint as durable as thiesman may even been knocked out of game by raiders joe SURE threw interceptions in only superbowl to do so couldn't been avoided against that oakland defense period and most likely joe had definite incerceptiobs in superbowl and superbowl loss and no perfect superbowl run or no 4 superbowl wins with no incerceptions to contend with tom bradys'record. Heres most likely rod martin intercepts joe montana 2even 3 times lester hayea 1 pick tony haynes 1 pick jack squirek 1 pick dan fouts chargers beat 49ers superbowl team raiders beat chargers most of the time from you throw the ball as many times as fouts montana on that raider era team your GONNA give up just enough picks to lose the game bill walsh might have got so desperate and delusive they tried to throw long on hayeshaynes superbowl interception record for joe montana arm not strong enough not half thiesmans arm strength for long passes thiesman played about as good as you could against that oakland defense raiders had their playbook from earlier season loss 49ers lost to the bengals in early season 1981 the bengals "use same plan that win the early seasob game"and 49ers had their gameplan for the suoerbowl the same curse happened to washinton un that raider suoerbowl. The interesting point is marcus allen competed with ronnie lot for the cornerback position at usc i predict marcus alkeb still set superbowl records agaist 49ers in that suoerbowl and ronnie lot migjt have injured todd christensen or cliff branch resulting in raider retaliation buring joe montana and roger craigalong with acouple of interference penalties a few personal fowls the 49ers barely stayed in it more like it the refs GAVE 49ers the game with bogus penalties on the raiders they cost them a lot of games in the 90s that way total false penalties that never occured the most likely outcome crooked officials give 49ers a raiders superbowl. Their defense in that superbowl peaked perfectly like a joe namath brute or pierce brosnan pepsi commercial its probably better we didn't see raiders vs dallas or 49ers in a superbowl instead of bitching about never seeing them we'd all want pete rozelle prosecuted for rigging after the officials ensure the raiders lost both games calling 50 penalties they never committed we got robbed of crooked assed pete rozelle and nfl officials giving dallas a superbowl inatead of playing the broncos not on a fumble in the 1978 championship gane where pete rozelle told officials to give denver the game md robbed the raiders of a fumble nut because they allowed defenses all that year to hogtie dave casper and worse in that championship game .they didn't call hogtieng casper for interfernce the whole game or season oakland might of barely won if the officials done the job.then we had the disgust of the raiders being cost dozens of ganes in the 80s by not giving tjem.penalties but calling them for false penalties and allowing the other teams penatiea free on them one good point was in a marc wilson game againat the dolphins don shula was on the rules committie and was ordering what penalties he wanted against the raiders defense like non exiatent interfetence and personal fouls shula was mad cause marino threw a pick 6 into his on end zone un his record year to tony haynes the shula cost marino his 49th td that year trying to run un a td right before halftime with the raiders leading and the raiders stuffed them as the half expired shulas officiating probably kept marino from a 60 td regular season that year then smirf mark clayton got penalized clippung van mcelroy furtherinfuriating shula but in spite of officials best efforts to take that game from the raiders fan marinos arm and short passes 2 big plays got beat by marcus allens legs and 3 long runs with a forth one callex back in a raider penalty of course marcus alkens legs beat the officials and dan marinos arm and mark wilson vs dan marino dont go shulas way . the end result is pete rozelle had it in for al davis for moving to l.a.the officials were programmed to cheat the 80s raiders out of games as a result as bad as. We wanted a plunkett raider team vs sanfransico superbowl we wpuld all be still spitting nails to this day after the nfl and officials gave the game to an inferior 49er team by inventing penalties on the raiders and giving san frnsico a free unlimited penalty ticket in a superbowl now a fairly officiated superbowl between this era raiders and 49ers probably would a been perfect record joe montana setting superbowl interception record he didn't have near thiesmans arm to zip balls in and they only ever beat the marc wilson raiders with ted hendrickas retired and lester hayes over the hill or rerired.

vikings coulda had marcus allen and Joe montana let that sink in.... They chose Dave Huffman over Montana then took Dils right after Montana... Took Disco Derin Nelson over Marcus Allen. Once Jim Finks left in 74 to the Bears Vikings had a slow decline result in bad drafting
