Penn State graduate/fan here, but that was pretty clearly a touchdown. He bobbles it for a hot second, but if you slow it down, he gets control and still has his entire body off the ground except for that right foot. TD. We caught a huge break on that. It's funny because we got a huge break the year before in the same area, on that catch by Mike Mcloskey against Nebraska. He was so far out of bounds on that catch on the sidelines it's actually absurd. Everyone talks about Bowman's catch to win the game, but that was pretty clearly a good catch when you see it from behind the QB. The Mcloskey catch on the previous play was WAY out of bounds! We've been screwed our share too. They probably all even out over the long term.

Yet, control of the ball counts too. When he established his one foot, he didn't have control. He gained control when his whole back was out of bounds. But hey, I'm a Penn State guy. But I can relate. In 1995, Penn State should have been National Champs. But a few crappy calls by the refs, against Illinois, made the game closer than it appeared. So Nebraska jumped Penn State as #1. And Penn State went to #2. Then, Penn State crushed Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and Nebraska BARELY beat Miami. And because old Tommy Osborne cried enough, the votes went to Nebraska.

Dang, I can't believe I left out the most important part. PSU is the only team who's been screwed out of more National Championships than Bama. And the parallels between the programs are uncanny. PSU is one of the "good guys". Treat them as such. Not to mention the next and last play of the game was about the stupidest damn call I've ever seen in my life. Toss sweep. I remember it well. Because I lost my mind. If you're in a short situation near the goal, and you're going to run the ball, you need to either pop something quick and strong up the middle (shortest distance between two points always has been, always will be, a straight line), or call a bootleg so the QB has some options. Toss sweep was the worst damn thing you could call. The risk of fumble increases, it's slow developing, and in a short situation like that, the DBs can't beat the DL into the backfield once they see the RB. Especially if there's no receiver in the right corner of the endzone. Because, even on the slightest chance he does throw the ball, I guarantee you a coach is not going to ask a tailback to throw across his body. The whole thing was jacked up.

@@elefantecremisi wrong. If replay had been effect, it would have been a TD. Judgement calls (like offsides, holding, etc) are not reviewable. Catches, goallines, etc are, and it was clearly a TD. Another thing, is the Defense was in the neutral zone at minimum, if not outright touching the offense before, during and after the snap. Today that would be a defensive penalty which would have been declined. So lets throw all that out. At the time, with the rules in play they had, the encroachment/movement call was at most missed. It is a judgement call by the refs. As the guy catching the football had near his whole body inbounds, not just a foot, and the ref was right there, that wasn't a judgement call. That was a Penn State ref calling for Penn State. Hence, everyone and their family knows Alabama was robbed by a Penn State ref.

Alabama won that game. Yes the score was 34-28, but we all know BAMA won that game. Cheap shot reff...cheap and foul.

Clearly in bounds. Bama won.

Interesting that Joe Paterno never beat Bear Bryant. And Bear never beat Ara Parseghian. That was a terrible call.... But weren't both teams mediocre in 83?
@robjohnson88615 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of college football stats and I would have bet your right arm that Paterno had at least 1 win. Interesting. And the Bear was 41-3 against coaches that were not named Ara in the 4 seasons Bear played Ara. And 41-7,otherwise. Damn. Who knew.

Bama fans need to settle down. Yes it was a catch in the end zone but the Bama tight end moved. The correct call on the play was not a TD but rather an illegal procedure penalty on Bama.
@MaxsGamingHub9 жыл бұрын
Number 99? He is the only one who moved and that is a type of play
@MaxsGamingHub9 жыл бұрын
Maxs Gaming Hub even though he is not a TE, but still.

Not the guy in motion, he's fine. The TE on the right side of the line.

No it wasn't. You can not apply half the rules of today and half the rules of the time it was played. Replay wasn't installed back then and the flinch of the OL due to encroachment wasn't seen. No penalty. Happens all the time back then. The TD however, was seen by millions of people at the time and the referree was standing right on top of it as the Bama player rolled in bounds before falling out of bounds. His involvement with Penn St influenced that call.
@buckstraw9253 жыл бұрын
@@stanleymyrick4068 So you want to apply replay for the back of the end zone but you want to ignore the guy moving on the OL. IF the officials got everything right it would have been illegal procedure overuling a legal catch in the back of the end zone. Case closed.

The play should have never occurred. PSU jumped into neutral zone, Bama TE flinched, should've been neutral zone infraction on PSU, half the distance to the goal, then play the down
@robjohnson88615 жыл бұрын
When the defense is offsides, play continues (free play), correct. With a NZI, the whistle is blown immediately and the penalty is assessed. The whistle was not blown immediately. In terms of instant replay today, offsides (they didn't call NZI) is not a reviewable play, correct. But the no touchdown was a reviewable play. It would have been a touchdown. Bama was robbed.
