Immense thanks for showing this, the most memorable arcade game I played in my early teens; in my case it was a seated enclosed version with full yoke and embedded fire buttons. Oh, I remember it all - frustration galore to navigate that bloody trench. In the few times I played I could never destroy the Death Star. So it’s such a thrill decades later to see thing explode in all its vector glory!

There was Astron Belt released at the same time. That was a laserdisc video game, but its integration with the control was better than Dragon's Lair or Space Ace in my opinion.

Nothing could top those color vector games from Atari. They just rocked! Especially in a dark arcade. Played this one and Tempest a lot.

I remember playing this and getting to level 8 just like the guy in the video. I was insane! the trench run was nearly impossible especially due to the wire-frames making it really difficult to work out where the gaps were! awesome game :)

It was one of the greatest Atari vector games. There was a stand-up version and a sit-down cockpit. Funspot in Weirs Beach, NH has both versions operating today.

My peak was at 15 and 16 (before the game went away). Thing is, once you got past Wave 11, the later waves are just segments of 7 through 11 in some order. (Tie Fighter scene might be wave 8, towars could be 10, trench 9, for example.)

It was a video game that paid homage to George Lucas’ creations and the movie saga that enamoured millions of its fans---the video game was Star Wars, and when I played my first plays at the machine, I can recall the cheesy computer music that played the iconic background of music made popular by John Williams---the Star Wars theme, and the Dark Side theme. The first part of the game focuses on you as a X-wing rebel fighter pilot, Luke Skywalker, the iconic character in the movie, and the object is to destroy as many enemy Imperial tie fighters as possible under the signature distant background of the Death Star planet. After this part is cleared, you go into the Death Star itself and try to fight obstacles and enemies that are trying to destroy you, and you need to destroy the exhaust port as you leave the Death Star or you have to go through the second part again. Destroying the exhaust port means you destroy the Death Star and the stage is cleared. Then there is the 2nd stage, and then the 3rd stage, and each stage gets harder and harder. The game ends when you lose your last shield and you get a direct hit from an enemy obstacle or an enemy fireball.

In that case, it was, but I've stood for hour-long plays. It's funny, I'll just quote this from 1988: Guy says to me, "How many shields do you start with?" Me: "Six". Guy: "How many do you get after completing a level?" Me: "One", Guy: "...and you're on level 35?!" Me: "Yep!"

Is there an ending to this game or does it just keep going till you die, like pacman
@blairquinney2148 жыл бұрын
It was around 1988 before I knew a coin-op video game could have an ending. For the first like 17 years there were no endings. Like LIFE. You just keep going til you die. Something's going to get you eventually.
@Poglavnit_Pferdefuhrer6 жыл бұрын
Even games with "endings" didn't really have them, you still went into tougher loops, like B-wing, ASO, Raiden. Time Pilot and Time Soldier did a nice meta joke on it that justified the loop due to time travel. I'm not aware of the first that truly ended, but the first I encountered was Renegade (side scroller like Double Dragon but based more on hong kong style police films)

That's a fantastic game, even by today's standards. Star Wars, Battlezone, Gravitar, Asteroids and Tempest have all kept their appeal. PS: 7th wave isn't that tough... give it some practice. When you master 7th and 8th round perfectly, then you're able to play this game as long as you want.
