1983 EVINRUDE 35 HP , been sitting for years

Wonderful videos and really helpful. It is always fun watching someone that knows their stuff. Got a puzzle for you. Pulled my 84 Johnson 35 out of several years of storage a couple weeks ago. Started and ran, got water from the indicator right away. Then the water stopped. Pulled the lower, impeller looked fine but completely replaced the water pump with an oem kit since it was apart. Still no water, pulled the head cover and replaced the thermostat. No blockages seen. Passages were very clean actually. Pulled the exhaust cover, no blockages. Put it all back together with new gaskets. Garden hose connected to the water riser tube runs water out of the indicator as it should. Installed the lower still no water from the indicator. Pulled the power unit and replaced the upper grommet, guide, and gasket. Everything looked good. Replaced the complete water pump again on chance the first new one was bad. Still no water from the indicator. Did the testing with both muffs and a tank. It is getting exhaust from the indicator and the various ports on the midsection and thru the prop. The engine runs fine. Any clue what I am missing?

Assuming you installed the impeller correctly, and that water passages are indeed clear based on your test, there is only one thing left-thermostat. Let motor run hot to the touch of a finger but not too hot where you can’t touch the head for like three seconds as you don’t want to overheat, but see if thermostat opens up. Or, take thermostat out and do a boil water test, and see if it opens and closes when out of boiled water consistently. Could be a failing thermostat.

My little 1986 25 seahorse has 135 psi on each cylinder and zero spark the guy I got it from gave up on it. I got to looking at it yesterday and the coils are not grounded. I grounded them the way they are supposed to be and BAM got spark. I don’t know if you realize this but you and this old outboard have help so many people become better at OMC engines and for that I thank you 😊 PS the king crab looks amazing.

I’m either too old or too lazy for a pull start 35. I think laziness has more to do with it than age. I full well remember the tootsie pop commercials. I’d take that day over this present one anytime.

Excellent kodi, watching and seeing recoiled, cowl with two broken bolts,and kind of rough turning, is saying that there is something just not right internally or in the the foot. Which you already have mentioned. Can’t wait to see the next video? Thanks for sharing.

Those old OMC's are like the EnergizerBunny, they just keep running. I sure would want to get it repaired. It sounds minor, and there are a LOT of good years left in it. A little TLC goes a long way with these motors, but few people give it any. They are really easy motors to maintain. I never could get to the center of a tootsie pop without biting it, tried many times!

I got the same motor was sitting for years and not running. Cleaned it up, changed fuel pump, cleaned carb twice using a gallon of carb cleaner and tips you’ve shared in your other videos, motor starts real east now, primer bulb stays hard during and after it dies. Basically, it sneezes lightly and then dies mostly when first started, lasts longer like ten minutes when hot and like 2 minutes when cold. I watched videos on how to adjust the carb and I have tried every position from 1 full turn, 1 1/1 turns, 2 full turns, and the n betweens giving it a lot of time to adjust and still happening. Reed valves are good. Starts super easy, even when I rev it still does the symptom of sneeze and die. Fuel line is new and fuel is good. I tried same tank and line on another motor and it’s running well. I’m lost I need help.

I have a 1981 evinrude 35hp pullstart, it won't turn over unless I pull the spark plugs out,it set for 5 years in a barn before I purchased it, just can't figure it out

Sure we can figure it out, OK so what brand type /# spark plugs R U using? With the plugs out squirt some 2 cycl oil in the cylinders. Get a socket that fits the flywheel nut, Spin motor over for 3-5 minutes with a electric drill with plugs out. Your plugs should B champion L77jc4 or QL77jc4. Once motor has been spun good replace plugs and see if it will pull over. kb

@@kodibassInsideoutboards OK I bought the plugs and put 2 cycle oil in and installed plugs, it won't spin over, I let it sit over night and tried again and still nothing

@@swdw197478 Ok time to look inside @ the cylinders, It's no big deal remove the power pack, coils & anything in the way of the head bolts. Take out the 8 head bolts & see how the cylinder walls look. kb

I have a 1983 35 HP Evinrude we have replaced all lines , coil packs and cleaned the carb. Runs like a top for 10 minutes then starts surging an bogging down . You got any ideas on what may be causing this? Your videos are very very helpful

Re-check the carb. look hard @ the upper transition chamber holes for blockage. kodi

After ten minutes or so fuel bowl on carb gets empty and fuel pump is failing to keep it at proper level-is my unprofessional theory. I would absolutely re-clean carb as that never hurts but I would also inspect fuel pump (assuming all lines were sealed properly at connections)

The parts diagram for that motor's carb (#393057) shows an electric choke bolted to the side of the carb, but I don't see it on that carb. Is the electric choke just optional for when you have a controls box and key switch? I see a manual choke on this motor that makes me think the electric choke in the parts diagram is just for keyed applications.

I can’t eat shellfish 🦐 I have the GOUT I love shrimp and crab scallops and all the good stuff but can’t eat it no more to much pain and my 1956 30 hp Johnson carb is different than the newer ones

Sorry to Hear that Sam, Have you tried any of the imitation products? They are affordable & very good most are made from haddock or pollack , & have No shell fish extracts or shell fish ingredient's Some R even made with Alaskan salmon. I buy from time to time crab cakes made of Pacific Pollack. Yummeeee. Oh' yes a 56 whole different motor 4 sure. thanks kodibass
