1983 Honda Magna VF750C V45 Front Shock Oil Seal Replacement with custom made PVC slide hammer.

Replacement of a Front shock oil and dust seal. Plus the design of a PVC slide hammer to drive the new seal down enough to return a new snap ring in the main part of the shock.

I see some pitting on the long fork "piston" that is supposed to be shiny smooth. Should that be remedied with fine steel wool first???

You are exactly right! I removed it the best I could and the lower part under the seal looked OK. The top of the piston is pitted far below the level of material that makes up the piston (below the diameter the piston needs to be) and needs to be filled in or replaced all together. The PVC wasn't my idea. I found it reading the v4 muscle bike forums. That is the same place I learned the trick with the clutch push rod seal.

I had some pretty bad rust pits so I used 0000 steel wool and some WD40. I don't know if that was the best but it worked. It took a lot of elbow grease.

I’m about to do my ‘84 VF750F, I’m assuming they’re the same forks, and Jeez wtf was that green gloop, looked severely rotten. Rich for the U.K. 🇬🇧

Some fork oil manufacturers have a green color. It didn't smell good at all though! Not that it should but it was in need of replacement. Good luck on the fix. You can also look up videos on the honda sabre. They have the same forks.

@@erictheamerican thank you, I thought the VF750s all seem to be the same overall, mine needs quite a bit doing, I just bought it for just under £1300 here in the U.K., which is quite good as there are very few of them about.

Good work. Why the green stuff coming out of the forks. Someone loaded it with fork oil? I was suprised to find Magna takes ATF.

Yeah I'm not sure what that green stuff was but I'm sure glad I replaced it.

@@erictheamerican I just drained my forks on my 1982 Magna. The forks were filled with the same green stuff that yours were. Does that mean that the factory put the green stuff in? The stuff stunk like manure. In the manual I have for my bike it tells me that I should only change my fork oil if I am having any problems including seals leaking. I am going to try this first to see if I can actually solve my leaking seals.

@@DougBennettActs6-1 not sure what factory oil is used but Bel-ray is green and can be found in different weights. All the forums and even the service manual called for ATF. forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=16633.0 It's not for our bikes but it talks about the different oils

@@DougBennettActs6-1 do you read anything from v4musclebikes.com They have a ton of info there. I'm a thin guy so thin oil is fine for me. If you need more pressure a heavier weight would keep the front higher in a quick stop.

@@erictheamerican I found in my manual that 10 fork oil or Dexron can be used. I also found a spacer on my left brake of a zigzag shape not in the book and an idle control knob in the book that doesn't exist on my bike. Not too reliable of a book
