@@Moonfleet41 Can I ask one puzzling question? I stopped by a well known local suspension shop and asked about them replacing my fork seals and got a negative (no, can do). With explanation that they don't have the right tools for such long forks? WTF? (They are known for race suspension set up) But, just when would the issue of having to re-compress the spring and needing special tools come into play or be a concern? TIA.... Susan

If you want an honest mechanic…. Get in there and turn them wrenches I have never out of dozens of encounters and much wasted time money and trust been short changed and lied to only to be in the position I should have taken from the beginning… wearing the blue coveralls and seeing the work through myself it’s same as any project you had to do in school first you find out what you are finding out the subject then researching that specific subject or component specific to your make and model not just videos either you read forums buy tech manuals read service bulletins from manufacturer buy specialty tools whatever you need to do to give yourself the best possible chance of success you will never do it another way after you start taking care of the work on your own it’s a great feeling

Great info mate. Bugger.. I just did my fork seals following your instructions, everything went fine.... BUT, I found if I didn't fully screw the valves in on the spring preloaders they wouldnt go in the full amount of clicks to set them up..so I took the caps off, screwed the valves in all the way and now it works mint, . Bike handles so much better now, Thank you.🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍/10 🤩

Excellent video. Helped me no end in stripping down the forks on my ZZR1400. My local garage were going to charge £100 if I supplied the forks loose. OK, I spent around £90 on tools, seals and oil. But I can change the oil again in 12 months time for FREE. I ordered 2 litres of oil, just in case. Of all the things you can do on a bike. Fork oil probably makes the most difference. Especially if it's 10 years old... Cheers again Del

My local shop wanted to charge me $420+tax to do this on my '06 GSXR-1000. This video pissed me off after seeing how easily done this is and how much all my local dealers wanted to charge me for this service. I will be investing in $100 worth of tools to save myself well over $650 (cheapest quote I found for fork seal fix and replacing front tire). Earned a sub! =)

It's much easier to loosen the top cap when it's not clamped by the top yoke so loosen the top yoke and clip-on first, then the top cap, then the lower yoke. Hope this helps someone.

Agree entirely. Especially if the cap is pretty tight, the top clamp seems to compess the leg a (tiny! - everything is flexible..) bit making it even tighter. (as he said: "Actually, that's quite loose that ...")

Hello from New Zealand. I have found this video very very helpful for my peace of mind although im not a mechanic but spent 5 and a half solid years within the heavy diesel automotive and construction machinery industry providing service and maintenance to my personal transport vehicles are no issue but now that i own a kawasaki meanstreak . . . . motorcycle work is very much new to me and my hat comes off to you for providing a well presented walk through for us newbies to service and maintenance in the two wheels department. I probably wouldn’t have attempted this without your video. I’ve done other seals, but forks always scared me for some reason. But this is totally doable, and even the seal driver isn’t that expensive. There are nice aftermarket replacements for the springs, and even to add adjustable dampener on each fork. Amazing. I’m having fun wrenching on my bike.

I have re-changed oil seals on 3 different sets of usd forks due to a local bike repair shop not using the air gap messurment.. it's all very well adding the correct amount of oil if the internals are bone dry.. the air gap messurment tells you that 1/ the damper is bled and 2/the correct amount of oil has been added. . too much oil will cause exessive pressure and blow past the seals. ..... it seems rare to find mechanics these days that know exactly what they are doing ..... I would be happy to let this guy work on my own bike .

The clutch side fork seal on my 2019 Versys 650 blew just before the current two week lockdown here in Pune. And I was so @#$%&* fed up. All workshops, whether official or otherwise, are closed with very stiff fines for opening them even for cleaning up. And I was mortally scared to finger the USD fork. Delboy and Mrs Delboy, your absolutely brilliant tutorial was such an incredible relief. You cannot imagine how relaxed I became; to know that I can do this repair in my garage on my own and get the bike up was bliss. The professionally careful and sensitive way that you handled the various parts is a lesson in itself; I showed your video to my electronics engineer son just to teach him this finesse in workmanship. So methodical, systematic, calm and composed. No unnecessary attempts at superfluous humour or off-coloured remarks etc. The exemplar of what a technical video tutorial should be like.(There is another video for exactly the same job and the way the guy there has handled the parts is an insult to the art.) I haven't got the bespoke seal driver so will use some PVC pipe, insulation tape kind of mod. I'll play your video and work on the bike simultaneously so as to not make a single mistake. Thank you ever so much for this terrific video. I have posted it on the Kawasaki Versys group for the benefit of all members there. Namaste.

Happy to see finally this video from you. especially because it is a usd-fork. Also my words...fork oil has to be changed regularly like engine oil! To be honest, there are some additional points to mension and they are pretty important. When you put apart forks who have the bushings on the innertube you have to heat up the outer tube to reduce the possibility to damage the bushings - eespecially if you are planning to reuse it. Also quiet often the lower bushings are worn out without a damage on the teflon...this could also make the fork leak, cause the innertube can move in the outer and make a gap where the oil can drain out. If you drain the forks you have to get them more time or flush it with a bit of fresh oil, cause all the metall debry sits deep down at the bottom. If you have to polish the innertube, then do this job never in the direction the fork moves...always around and only(!) at chrome tubes...never ever at DLC or TIN coated inner tubes. Be aware of the spacer between the bushing and the seal. the sharp edge must be on the side of the seal - that is incredibly important. About the tools...alot of forks have these spacertubes to push down the springs. This KYB-Fork is a special one without this little tube. And you cant definitely do all bushes with this seal driver. Just as an example: the 05-06 CBR600RR is not possible cause the plastic is too short! If you engage the thread of the cap...turn it counterclockwise till the thread comes free...then turn it in. A damaged thread at this position is a true nightmare! And if you have a fork with mounted bushings in the outer tube, you dont have to use a seal driver at all Hope this helps a bit!

With the help of Delboys garage, I just replaced the steering stem cups and bearings, and disassembled the front forks, replaced the seals and re-filled with 10wgt on a 98 900RR. the bearings were shot and each fork only had about 4oz each of milky white watery oil. I also went over the suspension and set everything to the halfway mark. My bike now rides and handles like my 94 900RR did back in the day...which is "Resiliently". Thanks for the vids!

When you rub the 1200 paper for high spots you rubbed up and down was always taught side to side therefore micro grooves dont run up the fork allowing oil to go up the grooves ,that said great to watch really good info.

These small 'cc' one cylinder engine Yamaha(s) are 'sweet' fuel eficient and I consider it to be a tough small motorcycle. So much that I am willing to make it a keeper. The maintenance I'd say it is minimum in (my case) case it's a properly ridden 'n' kept one. I did have a connecting rod (the only one ..lol) replaced @ 66k Km. I never figured out what exactly caused the problem with it. The bottom part of it and top inside where it bears the crankshaft pin became rough or worn. I don't know the proper technical name for that type of tear and wear. I wonder what can make that happen. Always kept with good engine oil changes. After that happened I decided to upgrade from regular mineral engine oil to semi synthetic or 100% synthetic engine oil to avoid poor lubrication etc. I hope you will keep producing these great videos. No because you dont measure to the outer tube.. you measure down to the top of the inner tube.. the tube that contains the oil..!!!! i should have said..!

Not necessarily, Ducati manuals with Showa forks clearly says "slide both the damper and outer tube fully down the inner tube..." oil level needs to be measured from top of the outer tube

Fork seals replacment is very seldom and I've owned 30 mega motorbikes ! Because of the rare problem of knackered forkseals I've only replaced once on old rd400, BUT USD forks ??? Is another story and my current MV Augusta F4 needs new fork seals! So seeing your top professional video gave me hope for USD forks! ! So absolutely brilliant video and can't thankyou enough! But just one thing ya not mention dude! The absolutely importance of NOT to scratch chrome legg! As I did on my Yamaha RD400 30 years ago! 👊 and thanks again for mega video

Just used this video to give me confidence whilst tackling (first ever) fork seal replacements on a ZXR750L3 and a Ducati 750ss carby while in lockdown. Fantastic. So easy to follow and so clear - you are a star and I find your videos mesmerising...I could spend far too long watching! Must have saved me me nigh on a couple of hundred quid, I am sure. Thank you for the video. I followed the exact steps and managed to change the seals. I don't have any experience so It took me 3 hours to do one side, and 30 minutes to change the seal in the second side. You Sir saved me 100 USD ❤

Great vid. A small caution you may like to add, "wind the damper rod out before reassembly in case the locknut moves". If it screws further down and the damper rod is wound in, when the caps are tightened the damper rod will be damaged.

Prob the only "How to" Ive watched all the way through...Do everything on my bikes myself but never forks (never had to) but after watching this, Im gunna take mine apart and re anodise the forks tubes. Well put together mate

Delboy - you inspired me to have a crack and replace my fork seals and headstock bearing - both were shot. You made the headstock job look a lot easier than it is!! Anyway fork seals: I tried two methods - the condom method and your milk bottle method of sliding on the new seals. I gotta say your milk bottle cone method works way better - the condom method just tears! Also tried the method of wrapping electrical tape to form a seal driver as I was too cheap to buy a driver - works quite well and doesn't bear on the inner seal. Thanks so much for this video. It was infinitely helpful in replacing my fork seals on my Africa Twin. I was just going to take them off and top up fluid for a leaky seal. Glad I learned how to do it as both seals were torn and would have continued to leak. The step by step instructions made this a fairly easy job.
