Brad I’m enjoying your videos immensely. Thank you for your efforts and great step by step instructions. I have a suggestion for you I think may work/help during your stripping and plating processes. Use a larger alligator clip and connect it to the hosel instead of the blade. This will keep the clip out of the work area and allow you complete access to your working surface. Again thank you for sharing with us your knowledge and passion.
@BradMeehan3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Mark. Yes, the larger alligator clip has solved my woes since this video. The little one would shoot off so the blade was the only place it would stay on! I'm learning as I go too!

Brad, this is a GREAT video! Wonderful instructions!!! Can you give me some advice on something I'm working on? I've got a Scotty Cameron Santa Fe tei3 that has a few dings in the tei3 center. Will this work to fill in the dings on the tei3 insert? Obviously the tei3 insert is made up of mostly copper. But I'm not sure what the other metals are... What's your opinion? And I'd appreciate any helpful tips!
@BradMeehan2 жыл бұрын
I believe it's stainless, so I would avoid the acid bath and only work on the face insert. You can polish the rest with just the sanding/polishing but no plating is needed.

Makes me want to try it on some of the old clubs I have at home. How did the fully plated copper heads turn out? Would love a video on those!
@BradMeehan3 жыл бұрын
I'd say they were "ok" only because I spent zero time polishing them first. I did it as an experiment to see if it would work. The quality really depends on the underlying condition of the metal and the prep. I'll make a video of it with a full polish first. That sound like a good idea. Stay tuned!

Hi Brad, first off I love the videos and the passion, I pick up something every time I watch one. I have a quick question about the book (manual) you use to look up your irons and clubs. Is it possible to share the book’s name? I’d like to try to find one as I am looking to try my hand at refinishing/refurbishing on a very small budget. Thank you for all you do! Curtis ❤😊

Thank you, Curtis. I have two books. One is called "The Golf Club Identification and Price Guide III: The Golf Industry's Standard Reference." www.amazon.com/dp/0927956047/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_apa_gl_i_84GEMMXZQHABNNA3E2Z5?linkCode=ml1&tag=bradmeehan-20 The other is a book by Jim Kaplan called MacGregor Golf History (and Wilson Golf History). They are a collection of catalogs from the beginning. Here's one on Amazon, but you can find them cheaper on eBay from time to time: amzn.to/44iY2A9

Thanks for the video, that was helpful Question: can you estimate how many shots you took or amount of time using that club to get to the amount of wear at the beginning of the video?
@BradMeehan3 жыл бұрын
I bought these clubs used, so this is the condition of the club when I got them. I'd say it was years of shots, but the rest of the club was in such good condition it's hard to estimate. The good news is, it's easy to redo it if it wears. The most time is spent in the prep.

Thanks, Alan. They're referred to as the Kaplan books. They're a collection of all the manufacturers catalog going ALL the way back. I have MacGregor and a Wilson book. They're on ebay. I paid 50ish for mine. There are sellers that way overcharge, so don't get robbed. Look for "Jim Kaplan Wilson" and you'll see them.

Can you do this to a sandblasted face or does it have to be polished?

Either. It will just take on the texture of what's beneath it.

I have some of those original m65 my copper faces are perfectly intact with a nice patina but I'm surprised at how much of the N ickle on the rest of the club has worn away to show the copper beneath. There's no chrome I there? I would think it's steel with a layer of copper then a layer of nickle?
@BradMeehan Жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to do some digging. I'm working on a MacGregor Tommy Armour right now that was similar. The top layer looked chrome-ish, but not like modern chrome clubs. I have old chrome clubs that do not have this same appearance.

Hi Brad. I want to get and retire a set of Ping Eye2 beryllium copper irons. And also I'm interested in the Ping Karsten Answer type putters. Would you go full copper plating on the irons or is there a way to clean them up without electroplating?
@BradMeehan3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Craig. Since they are solid (and not plated), you'll be able to just sand, polish, and buff them. I have a subscriber who did a set and they look really good. You may find they're too shiny, and may need to dull them by either giving them a light.scuff with a green Scotch Brite pad or go over the club with the media blaster at a lower pressure. Otherwise it'll look like that putter I just did in my last video.

Do you have to take off the chrome to nickle plate it.

Yes. It will not bond to chrome or bare steel. It first needs a tiny layer of nickel (nickel strike) then it will bond.

They'd "cringe" cause they do everything the proper way. They know what all the problems are, and eliminate them. They charge folks LOTS of money for their work, so professional platers do fantastic work. And, they plate all kinds of stuff, all day long, everyday. You're doing great work as a DYIer with a "home setup."

You can’t plat on chrome ?
@BradMeehan Жыл бұрын
No, it won't bond on top of chrome. Chrome won't plate onto bare steel, so you have to nickel plate it first. I suppose if you haven't penetrated the nickel layer, you could re-chrome into the existing nickel? 🤔
