1976-85 (10 seasons): AFC Divisional Round of the Playoffs - Home team was 10-10. Each season, one home team won and one home team lost. It was Miami's turn in both 81 and 83 to take the L in the Divisional Round. They got the W though in 82, 84, and 85.

Shula saw the future with David Overstreet... tragic how he soon died after.

HOF defensive back Darrell Green was taken in the draft right after Marino. What if-we had taken Green instead of Marino. After all, our '82 team made it to the S.B. with Woodley and Strock, so why couldn't the '83, '84, and '85 team make it with the addition of Darrell Green ??

Remember also that Marino's only Ring came in the '84 Conference Championship Game. We could have traded later on for a QB. In other words, Marino got us 1 Conf. Championship, well so did Woodley.

Imagine if we could have traded for the rights to sign Jim Kelly- a QB that played good enough to help his team win 4 Conf. Championships.

Here are Marino's stats from his 3 Champ. Game losses-he had 4 TD's BUT 6 INT's, a Comp.% of UNDER 50%, an avg. Passer Rating of UNDER 60, and he led our offense to an avg. of only 12 p.p.g. How can a team win championships when their QB is playing like that ?

@@Snowboy2015 Yea, anyway Sandra- so what if Green helped his team to win 5 total championship games while Marino helped the Dolphins to win only 1, that is all fans like Prince Edward wanted out of Marino. One is better than NONE after all.

I was at that game. Marino was rusty. Strock should have played. He finished the season hot. Not that fumbling Fulton didn't help with the 2 back to back fumbles.

The injuries at linebackers were discussed, but what about Larry Gordon dropping dead of a heart attack a month before training camp?

NFL Films avoided talk of death. Miami lost several football players in the early 80s. None were mentioned. Delaney died in KC. Crickets.

July 1, 1981 - Chambers dies - car accident June 25, 1983 - Gordon dies - heart attack June 24, 1984 - Overstreet dies - car accident (June 29, 1983 - Delaney dies - drowning)

@@MGAF688 It must be stated that, although Rusty Chambers wasn't mentioned specifically, in both NFL '81 and the Road to the Super Bowl version of the 1981 season, called "Hard Times in a Difficult Year", it is mentioned that the Dolphins lost a starting linebacker in an auto accident, which of course, was Rusty Chambers. However, there was no mention of David Overstreet suffering the same fate in the Road to the Super Bowl episode from the 1984 NFL season (though Overstreet's deciding to play in the CFL is also mentioned in both versions of NFL Films documentaries of the 1981 NFL season without actually mentioning him by name). Truth be told, while Don Shula basically built the east coast version of Air Coryell in the mid-80s, having three active players die in in the span of three calendar years probably had a lot to do with the fact that, even with a powerful passing attack rivaling Air Coryell, the Dolphins couldn't keep up after 1985 and compete with the Elway-led Broncos or the Kosar-led Browns in the second half of the decade.

Who would have known in '83 that the Dolphins had signed a QB that would turn out to be so bad in a majority of his playoff games-his biggest games of his career. Pro-Football-Reference did a study in '08 to determine the Value that a QB gave to his team in the playoffs. Dan's overall Value turned out to be a terrible NEGATIVE 156.
@dennismumford6108
@dennismumford6108 3 жыл бұрын
The P-F-R study found that Marino gave his team a Negative Value in 10 playoff games and a Value in the single digits in 2 other games. That represents 66% of all of his playoff games and 3 of those Negative Value games were championship games-2 were Conf. Champ. games and 1 was his S.B. game.

Other more successful QB's had much higher Values. Favre's Value was 302, Warner 422, Staubach 461, Aikman 527, Young 580, Elway 767, Bradshaw 903, and Montana 1,292. Again, Marino's Value was NEGATIVE 156. Dan was playoff challenged a good majority of the time.

Again, this study was done in '08 and never updated or else Brady, both Mannings, Brees, and Rodgers would be up there also.

@Harry Engel Good points Harry-however while Marino did play good enough to help Miami win those first 3, that number should probably have been more like 7-9 given the TEAM that Dan inherited in '83.

Marino's best playoff game was the '84 Conf. Champ. Game, but his other 3 championship games ('84 S.B., '85 Conf. Champ., and '92 Conf. Champ.) were 3 of his worst and were all NEGATIVE VALUE GAMES. His worst though was the '97 Wildcard-he had a Rating of only 29.3 and only 3 points.
