It's a beautiful engine, I've got one myself, hehe. I have an American engine in Europe, unfortunently, but what I wonder is what kind of octane was it running originally, and what do you think about running it on 95 (or 98 for that matter - the higher compression one maybe would like it ?, those two are all the options we got over here) or unleaded at all ?
@edredas4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Our US cars have 91 RON printed inside the fuel door flap which is equivalent our 'regular' 87 AKI octane rating. So 95 octane over there will be fine since it is equivalent to our 'mid-grade' 91 octane. Good luck!

Hey Edredas, thank you so much for your vids. Is there any risk to bent a valve on a 951 turbo engine in case the timing belt breaks ? The pistons have a different shape compared to the NA correct ? Thanks again for the vids they are really helping
@edredas4 жыл бұрын
Yup, the pistons are a different shape but despite this the valves will still bend if the timing belt breaks. Thanks!
@silverlbc33424 жыл бұрын
edredas thanks for the time spent to answer me ! Got it ! Just bought recently a 951 turbo from 1986, I got a strong squeak coming from alternator or AC compressor, which goes when engine is hot (5/10min of driving) The timing belt was too tight and I couldn’t turn the water pump by hand like on your vids so I loosened a bit the tensioner, but the noise is still here. the accessory belt was also too tight, same, but the noise is still here after startup. By experience, it could be a bearing on the alternator or AC compressor ? How could I check precisely from were it’s coming ? For sure it’s forward driver side in the engine bay Thanks again for your time

I’ve seen them pop up on eBay every now and then. While there are custom tools made for these cars, I have yet to see a simple solution for this seal or the rear main.
@CasinoMassage Жыл бұрын
@@edredas I appreciate your response. I think I’m going to have a shop make a simple solution for the front crank oil seal. If it works, I’ll have them make another and send you one. Is that seal supposed to be seated flush with the case? Or does is it supposed to be pressed in a bit further. I know there are some differing opinions. Your videos have been most helpful in work on an 86 944. Thanks again!

Very good video. Would rings typically just go in without a hone? Any big deal in changing the main bearings if you had wanted to do that?
@edredas7 жыл бұрын
When changing the rings I use Sunnen AN-30 paste to clean up the cylinder walls. The main bearings are easy to change but you must remember to seal the girdle with RTV. I have a few engines I'm working on right now so I'll try to cover this in a video. I hope that helps!

You do rod bearings without checking clearance? I’m about to do mine on my 83 and I don’t know whether to plastigage or not. The internet is torn. Another great video!
@edredas5 жыл бұрын
It mostly comes down to a lot of factors. The first factor is that this engine still had the original bearings, so that meant none of the bearings had spun before and an over-sized bearing wasn't used. Also there was no scoring on the crank or bearings what so ever since this was just a preventative measure. If I had seen anything out of the ordinary then I would've checked the clearance just to verify there wasn't any oil starvation, but there were no signs of anything. The only issue that might arise is the bearing is tight around the edges, but you wouldn't see this with a plasti-gauge either. Any wear on the sides of bearings from being a little too tight, while isn't ideal, usually won't cause an issue. If you see anything concerning then it might be worth checking the clearance, and actually I'd almost recommend it if its your first time... I hope that helps!

Do you know of an article or do you have a video the reasoning and benefits behind 6R oil cooler over 5R?
@edredas4 жыл бұрын
Bimmer Box shouldn’t be any benefit to the 5R housing since the factory workshop manual states to discard them on sight. Most likely due to seal failure. There is also no kits or instructions for the 5R housings. All kits available are solely for the 6R housing and are not shimmed or installed the same way. I hope that helps!

Thanks for the video! Is there a reason that you do everything with hand tools and don't use air or cordless tools?
@edredas6 жыл бұрын
I've never really thought about it. I do have some air tools but I only use them on the the suspension. I would never use any power tools on the engine since its too easy to strip the aluminum threads or snap old studs when removing bolt/nuts. Care and a little finesse is always needed, especially if the engine has never been taken apart before. So, I just like to take my time and pay attention to how everything feels. You can usually tell when a thread is stripping since it will feel odd and a little loose. I just want to catch any issues before it causes any further damage.
@tempest4115 жыл бұрын
Ditto on that. I spent all kinds of money on a compressor and tools only to find out I don't like using air tools on anything. If you can feel a fastener isn't coming out right, you can stop and apply various methods to 'message' it out, preventing damage to the hole or some other worse headache.

One mystery I cant get to the bottom of is front coil springs. New stock are not available and aftermarket are in a bunch of different spring rates. What do you recommend for a daily driver 944? Spacer or no spacer?
@edredas7 жыл бұрын
Usually, the softer the spring the better for daily driving. I believe the stock springs are 175 lbs but if you like a more sporty feel then 200 lb springs are pretty good but will lower the car about an inch. If you aren't looking to lower the car then you could always run a spacer to raise it back up but I personally like the car a bit lower. I hope that helps!

Thanks for posting this video! It makes me miss the 924S and 944 I used to have. I found your channel about a week ago and I have watched most of your videos since. I noticed that most of the seals and gaskets you put on dry when rebuilding your engine. Are there any seals that you do put RTV or some other sealant on? Thanks!
@edredas7 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for watching! I only use RTV on the crank girdle but other than that I use anaerobic gasket maker on the balance-shaft covers and oil pump where there are no gaskets. That said, it is not needed when replacing any new seals or gaskets and only makes a huge mess that you have to clean up next time. I know a lot of people like to use it as extra insurance but most of the time I only find RTV when someone is trying fix a leak without replacing the seal or gasket. Many times this only makes a mess and does nothing to stop the leak. I hope that helps!

How do you like the Permatex Anaerobic Sealer compared to the OE recommended Loctite 574?
@edredas7 жыл бұрын
It's just something I'm trying out, and as with anything it has its pros and cons. One of the things I like about the Permatex and the main reason I'm trying it out is because it is easy to remove. All you have to do is remove the cover and its basically a rubber gasket that you wipe off once it cures. The Loctite on the other hand dries hard and requires a lot of force to break the cover off once cured. Not to mention it almost impossible to remove without machining or chiseling which can damage the housing, so I wanted to find an alternative.

Our engine rebuilds start at $4800.This is one here is our lowest tier rebuild which just consists of the engine being de-greased, then having all the seals and gaskets replaced. Our highest tier rebuilds have the engine vapor blasted and all the hardware re-plated which leaves the engine looking like the day it left the factory. You can find some examples of those in my other videos. Thanks!

What the hell is wrong with you?! A properly painted engine sheds oil and grease easier because it's NOT as porous as the cast aluminum!
@edredas4 жыл бұрын
How many people properly paint their engines? Most just use a rattle can, which is not the correct/proper way to paint an engine. This engine had a terrible rattle can job so the paint had more oil on it than it normally would. If this was sprayed with a smoother/thinner catalyst paint from a gun then I would image that the outcome would have been different. However, that wasn't the case and the oil soaked through it, so why bother? It doesn't look good.
