CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Winston (John Hurt) and Julia (Suzanna Hamilton) have an intimate meeting in the forest.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
1984 is the second film version of George Orwell's cautionary novel. Though the events described by Orwell did not come to pass in the real 1984, the film's producers maintained a level of verisimilitude by shooting the scenes on the exact dates described in the novel. Otherwise, it's the same basic story: Winston Smith (John Hurt), a bureaucratic flunky living in the totalitarian state of Oceania, breaks the law by daring to fall in love with Ministry of Truth worker Julia (Suzanna Hamilton). Attempting to escape, Winston and Julia are tracked down by the Thought Police. Both must be "re-educated" into loving the State -- and by extension, the shadowy dictator Big Brother.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1984)
Cast: John Hurt, Suzanna Hamilton
Director: Michael Radford
Producers: Al Clark, John Davis, Robert Devereux, Simon Perry, Marvin J. Rosenblum
Screenwriters: George Orwell, Michael Radford

I imagined Cillian Murphy for Winston and Lena Headey or Ellen Page for Julia. They got the looks right in this film.
@geronimozarza8495
@geronimozarza8495 6 жыл бұрын
John McTernan Lena Headey is a great actress (I liked her role as Sarah Connor in the series "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and as Ma-Ma in Dredd), but acting as Julia would not work with her, because Julia has, according to the book, 26 years old, and Mrs. Headey could not make such a young character. Ellen Page is, so to speak, too beautiful to play Julia, since the character has to have a realistic beauty and according to the depressing and dystopian world of 1984, but Ellen Page has a too artistic, very artificial beauty. In my own opinion, if they were to make a new adaptation of 1984, Lauren Cohan (she performs in The Walking Dead playing Maggie Grenne) would be ideal; just look at his face, it's a replica of Suzanna Hamilton's face. And for Winston I'm not too sure, Adrien Brody looks good, although I have my doubts. I would like Michael Fassbender, since he immerses himself completely in his characters, his performance sinks with the script and the stage, and with some makeup we could convert him perfectly into the decrepit and distrustful "6079 Smith W".

Absolutely, but this is modern day promiscuous culture. People devoid of decency, worse than animals since they also promote their behaviour as something noble. When I start talking to people like this I find they are trying to fill one form or other of emptiness which they don't even realise they have.

I'm waiting for 1984 to get cancelled because "Julia is portrayed as a sexual object for the main straight white male protagonist to take advantage of. Understanding the novel as truly intended to be understood by sir George Orwell means to fully understand that the words, "I'm corrupt to the core" doesn't actually mean betraying the ruling party by the means of some sort of rebelliousness but corrupting oneself by the means of betrayal towards the one you promised to love. As intended by the antagonist, to truly betray oneself or your companion is to truly prove your sense of pride and loyalty to the party.

The film was actually just too short, though it mirrored the atmosphere of Blair's novel. The film was brilliant, but maybe perhaps, Peter Cushing's film WAS 1984. The American version is nowhere near the book, though it is definitely in the direction of these times today.

I don't get why Winston says he hates purity and wants everyone to be corrupt. Throughout the novel, he is a moralist; he even professes fidelity to Julia. I think he's being intentionally hypocritical; or maybe it's his weird way of venting frustration.
@natalieanimal4063

I seem to be one of the rare people that don't like how that was worded. I never thought of the explanations you gave, I hope those are the reasons because otherwise he'd be contradictory. What I did think of is maybe it was Orwell's way to emphasize how totalitartian societies call things there's nothing wrong with 'corrupt' and 'unpure', and being orthodox 'virtues', so people eventually start talking like that even if they don't literally think so, then it eventually leads them to thinking so.

Excellent film, great plot, but as a Southern American from a German Immigrant family I honestly couldn't understand the Posh accents worth a damn! Put both German and English subtitles over the screen and the movie turned out alright. P.S. It doesn't matter if You Speak German or if Your English is Southern American, 2:10 is well understood!!

I wonder if there was any ''holdout'' groups that lived in the country. Obviously we'll never, ever know the real state of things, but I'm curious at how smaller towns and more isolated settlements looked throughout Airstrip One. All we know is they have a permit to leave the city and there's hiking ''groups''. Honestly it's probably just proles living a pretty decent life relatively speaking.
