1984 Apple's Macintosh Commercial (HD)

"1984" is an American television commercial which introduced the Apple Macintosh personal computer for the first time. It was conceived by Steve Hayden, Brent Thomas and Lee Clow at Chiat/Day, Venice, produced by New York production company Fairbanks Films, and directed by Ridley Scott. Anya Major performed as the unnamed heroine and David Graham as Big Brother. Its only U.S. daytime televised broadcast was on January 22, 1984 during and as part of the telecast of the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII. Chiat/Day also ran the ad one other time on television, in December 1983 right before the 1:00 am sign-off on KMVT in Twin Falls, Idaho, so that the advertisement could be submitted to award ceremonies for that year.
In addition, starting on January 17, 1984 it was screened prior to previews in movie theaters for a few weeks. It has since been seen on television commercial compilation specials, as well as in "Retro-mercials" on TV Land. The estate of George Orwell and the television rightsholder to the novel 1984 considered the commercial to be a flagrant copyright infringement, and sent a cease-and-desist letter to Apple and Chiat/Day in April 1984. The commercial was never televised as a commercial after that.

Agree it’s not a 1:1 with 1984. However there are many similarities to where we are today...speakwrites, simplification of language to control nuance, tv screens in every local listening to you, control over media presented to the masses, a throwaway economic society, control over groups by hatred, thought control through fear of repercussions...I’d also point out that though clearly not the same, corporations and government are intertwining in ways that at least make me feel uncomfortable. Also there is the concern about the authoritarian left having the sympathies of the outspoken in big tech. In the end, life is complicated and nuanced - I think Huxley and Orwell hit on some key warning points that should make us all examine our society and remain suspicious of those who wield power.

I get it that 1984 irl was, indeed, not unlike the book, one of the years that kickstarted the global telecommunications system in a way that's more resembled to today's tech than the time GW actually wrote and published 1984. One could also argue it was the dawn of the surveillance era where everything is politicized and can lead to political turmoil, taking a little baby step closer to the "1984" of the book/movie. The commercial is ironic in so many levels.

Given how much data I found on myself with one data broker that was forced to release it for a legal case (the public was able to learn what group they were in, and the groups were described by what the broker knew about them)? And given that I've been very hesitant with any and all social media accounts since I started using the internet in mid 90's, as well as not allowing any cookies on all of my devices for years now to the point I can not view some pages due to them breaking? The data set on me was in the highest category and the only way it came to be was aggregation of data from multiple sources. Now... throw generative AI into the mix, and you have companies running our lives without us knowing. With that, they will be able to influence our politicians and institutions even stronger than they can now. Because right now they can offer you money and a cosy position when you move to the private sector, but knowledge of both the mass and a single person, and the ability to influence them? That is real power, or at least a tool to hold on to power for a long time. Yes, ocasionally one of the tech giants makes a blunder like Apple did with their commercial, but in general? Look at Apple. It has been one of the most consumer unfriendly companies out there for years now, and despite that people eat whatever it throws at them. Hook, line, sinker and would swallow the whole rod if they could. To make it worse, the place where best AI tools are made (USA for generative AI, and China for control AI) are either unregulated or straight keen on developing their tools further. We as a society have been on the loosing side of things for over two decades now, and rapid development of large learning models will only make it worse. People carry the worlds most sophisticated spying devices ever with them most of the time, even taking them to their beds. Their phones. And they are feeding corporations all their lives in the name of "convenience" without giving it any thought. So no, for the team at Apple, advertising the IPad Pro as a supplement to human creativity was no the dumbest and most evil shit they could have come up with. It was an honest and artistic exemplification of what they believe in and towards what they are leading us as a trend setting tech company. Do and get everything through us. It ain't pretty but at this point? I don't see it going anywhere but downhill right now.

Another reason is the limited tools the community was given, without the SDK it was difficult to create new aspects, let alone new campaigns that can keep people entertained.
