/ super100mph The Rise of the Mazda RX7 privateers! Most of the attention of Touring Car racing in the early 1980s was grabbed by the likes of Peter Brock, Dick Johnson Allan Moffat and Allan Grice. However, there was a group of outstanding privateers led by Peter McLeod that came away with some impressive silverware along the way. www.speedcafe.com/2009/10/20/p...
The 1984 Australian Touring Car Championship was a CAMS sanctioned Australian motor racing title for Group C Touring Cars.[1] It was the 25th running of the Australian Touring Car Championship,[2] and the last to be contested by Group C cars as new regulations,[2] based on international Group A,[3] were introduced for 1985.[2] The championship, which began on 18 February 1984 at Sandown Raceway and ended on 1 July at Adelaide International Raceway after seven rounds, was won by Dick Johnson driving a Ford XE Falcon.
Johnson's win gave Ford and its Falcon both the first and last ATCC wins under Group C regulations as Allan Moffat won the 1973 ATCC in a Falcon XY GTHO Phase III.[4] The win was also Ford's 12th ATCC win since the championship began in 1960 and the Falcon's 5th win overall after having previously won in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1981 and 1982. It was also the Falcon's last championship win until 1993.
1984 saw the first ever ATCC race win by a turbocharged car when George Fury won the 6th round at a wet Lakeside Raceway just north of Brisbane driving a Nissan Bluebird Turbo.
Peter Brock, driving a Marlboro Holden Dealer Team entered Holden Commodore, was the only driver to win more than once, with victories in the opening rounds at Sandown and Symmons Plains. Johnson's only win in the series was at the 4th round at Surfers Paradise, though he never finished lower than 3rd in any other round. Allan Grice won the last round at Adelaide, and thus the destinction of winning the last ATCC race run under Group C rules. Defending champion Allan Moffat only won one round of the series, at Wanneroo Park, and suffered a crash at Surfers Paradise in which he not only almost destroyed his Mazda RX-7, but also broke bones in his right hand and suffered a fractured sternum, forcing him out of the series. The only other winner was former champion Bob Morris who introduced some flavor to the series when he made a comeback to the sport in 1984, winning Round 5 at Oran Park in an RX-7 fitted with a standard gearbox after the race unit was broken in practice. Holden Commodore driver Warren Cullen was the only driver other than Dick Johnson to finish every round of the series. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Aus...

What the... mate you're bloody legend for uploading this gem. Cant believe it is 30 years ago this race, and I cant remember Masterton copping a minute penalty for jumping the start. Pity. He was looking good in this race. Cant believe how much rubber the green Falcon is leaving behind. Plenty of grunt but obviously the car was not up to it suspension wise. And fark, count how many of 'em bl**dy rice burners...they were everywhere. Thanks for this, much appreciation.

@Daz not Daz Yeah, but but both were definitely creeping when the flag dropped. Masterton knew he had a really good car more than enough to win whether Brockie went out or not. Masterton was in fine form during the Amscar series and he just wanted to show others how good his beaut Falcon is. .Just a little bit eager.... am convinced if Group C ran for another year Masterton might win some big races, even the championship itself. Then again the Bluebird were getting faster and faster, and then theres the Slick Mazda. I will do ANYTHING to go back in time back to those Group C years and perhaps pay alot more attention to everything than what I did. Thats the problem when being young and playing with Lego set.....mind tend to somewhere else. But now.......at least we got the dvd collection.

Bob Morris was running a stock gear box and pretty much the same for the car. Incredible. That’s what caught our imagination as kids, the competition between the different designs.

Mostly stock internals in the gear box, but it was a MFR (Mazda Factory Racing) gearbox casing which didn't expand as much due to heat build up, which could cause clearance issues. The rest of the car was extremely well sorted, as it was the ex Barry Jones car. Morris was a superb driver though. Would’ve been interesting to see the result if Moffat wasn’t out due to injuries sustained at Surfers…

This race was almost like Bathurst back in the day. Half the front runners ended up in the pits before 10 laps.

I agree and so do many but sadly they try and maintain hype of the modern era. We witnessed a great era.

And later in the broadcast they say it’s a good crowd compared to recent events but small compared to 10 years ago? Must’ve been huge back then.

Thank you for another great video on Australian motorsport History. Makes me wonder how PB would have gone in the championship, if he hadn't gone overseas ???

@@bretthiscock43 yeah I thought that might be the reference but thought he was always in Australia. Makes sense at the end when they talk about Brocky and Perkins taking on Le Mans.

Was there a control tyre and compound, or was it a bit "freer"?, these Aussie Touring Cars look like dragsters to me with the huge rear wheels...was that down to which tyres they could use ( a better tyre??) EDIT: Sorry I jumped the gun, the Commentator mentioned Avon and Dunlop, but still, why do they race such big wheels, surely smaller ones help acceleration and get the car lower on this track?

Interesting point. That was Group C touring car rules I guess. The greatest era of car racing Australia ever saw. I always thought the cars were that heavy and to get cornering speed the wider the tyre the more grip. In motorcycle world, I note Moto2 uses a very wide rear tyre, which I’m sure a narrower tyre would be better, but the organisers want that look.
