It's awesome to see Kate Schellenbach on drums! Rare footage of her as one of the founding members of The Beastie Boys. She played with them from 81 to 84. Her punk cred is solid.

It’s so weird seeing Mike as the leader and MCA an ad rock not being equal leaded, lol. They both kind of seem shy here, which is crazy. Mike seems pretty much like a normal punk front man.

I remember going to see the Butthole Surfers in '87. I was flying high on acid and they played something close to this song. I had an acid flashback watching this, because of this exact song. It was mainly the constant drumming over and over near the middle of their set... Shit got real for a sec and I didn't know if I had been poisoned or if I was having a stroke. Kids: Don't do too much acid.

George Pomar It was also stuff like Gang of Four. It's a diverse category, but basically bands that arose in response to the '77 punk milieu, but went off in more angular or non-traditional rock directions. I've never heard the Beasties described that way, but that's how I hear this obscure song. This is not straight forward punk or hardcore, no "blitzkrieg bop" or "egg raid on mojo" here.
@cardigansarecool
@cardigansarecool 7 жыл бұрын
Mike D. has said in interviews that in addition to hardcore they were really into bands like Gang of Four, ESG, The Slits, etc. You have to understand that back then things were not so regimented as they are now, a lot of these genres and categorizations are applied mainly in retrospect. I think that's the great thing about punk, it's an approach to creativity, not a specific sound. Gang of Four sounds nothing like the Sex Pistols, and the Sex Pistols sounds nothing like Talking Heads, and Talking Heads sound nothing like The Birthday Party, and The Birthday Party sound nothing like Minor Threat, etc, but they were all part of it.

@@TitoMariategui we’re talking about talent in comparison to BHS…not records sold, modern influence etc. BHS are obviously better musicians. Are you saying that popularity = musician talent? I love the beastie boys, but they’re not on the same level in that regard. You’re arguing a different thing. Are you telling me drake is a better lyricist than Lupe fiasco? King Coffey would have looked great on a skateboard. He drums like a skateboarder. I guess he was probably tripping enough to qualify as a skateboarder, even if he didn't skate. Well, he was a Butthole Surfer, at any rate. Butthole Skateoboarders doesn't have that same ring to it. But that's going to be my new band. Asshole Skateboarders, actually. New band. Thanks, Butthole Surfers. Anybody want to join my band the Asshole Skateboarders? I play the ham radio.

Some people are born beautiful. They don't have to try... they are beautiful no matter where they go or what they do. Other people are born smart. They were smart as kids, smart as teens, smart as adults, smart when they don't even mean to be. And then there are yet other people who were born obnoxious. Often, the host cable access shows.

Pretty sure if my mom dropped me off at this show I would have been 4 yrs old. At 38 now I’d probably be able to walk on water if she did.
