I had to share this video with a few of my family members! I was around 4 or 5 when this originally aired and my eldest brother was around 11 and getting into the Beastie boys and was watching this. Both my other brother who was 8 at the time and I started jumping around the living room like lunatics when the Beastie boys performed "Fight for your right " and I guess I thought I'd be cool and jump on our coffee table that had a busted leg and start dancing. Bad idea as the table broke sending me and whatever else was on the table crashing to the floor. Our mom heard it from the kitchen and yelled "What was that noise?" And without missing a beat my 8 year old brother yelled back "It's the Beastie boys!" Thankfully i wasn't hurt but our mom was pissed lol. It's one of the earliest memories of childhood I have and this is the first time i've seen this performance again since that night lol great memories. They were so young here!

JR is an awesome comedian and because of that not so great as a warm and welcoming talk show host. I loved how The BB cracked up when the Phyllis Diller line dropped and Adam pointed at Joan. Good shit. Thanks for posting.

Awesome interview and performance. I missed this episode back in the day. But we did go to a Beastie Boys concert in the late 80's while they were new. The only thing I remember is that I heard that the stadium decided not to sell alcohol because fights were happening at their concerts in other states. What a drag.

I just find it mind blowing that the UK broadcast of this led to people campaigning to the Beastie Boys banned from the country.

Over 10 million of license to I'll sold in the U.S. alone. It went diamond! Beastie Boys have sold over 26 million albums in the states over 50million worldwide. They need no introduction. Or need to explain themselves! One of the most iconic bands to come out of the 80's if not in history!

I remember that I had to wait til my brother was at football practice so I could sneak in his room and take his taped copy of this album to make a copy for myself. He never even wrote what it was on the tape so my mother wouldn't throw it away if she found it. Fantastic memories!

@@alansands256 - They were smart, they'd already put out some parody singles earlier that were clever. The idea of "rapping" a prank call, reggae played with plastic whistles, and their first EP was a parody of hardcore bands. If you were listening to all the new school rap at the time, you could go song for song in _Licensed_to_Ill_ and recognize what they were doing dead-on parodies of.

Joan Rivers was a perfect host to interview these guys! Other TV hosts might have been a bit too formal, but as one of the first "shocking" comedians (see Howard Stern), she had the perfect mix of irreverence and playfulness.
