I got fifty bucks saying Mondale loses is the election. Takers?

Ronald reagan was completely invincible, no one had a chance to defeat Ronald reagan. Gary hart was the only one who would have at least given Ronald reagan a fight.

I never saw this debate before; wasn't paying much attention to politics back in the early 80s. Thank you for sharing.

A few more years after they showed this on air, crack would devastate the inner cities that still have a ripple effect to this day.

I remember the days before crack, during and after. Now I see more drug addicted whites out in the open passed out in the street. Today it is opioids, meth cocaine.

48:30 hart says "there you go again" to mondale lol. What a great debate, some of the best political minds of a generation battling it out

This is timeless and timely. It needs to be studied by anyone who is serious about trying to understand how the levers of politics work against the average citizen in order to keep the status quo as it is. Most of the political arguments of 2020 are the same arguments of 1984.

I can't believe I'm watching this tonight (American Time Zones) for the 40th anniversary of this debate when there were only 5 nominees left. You can find "Where's the beef?" in timestamp 40:18.

This race was over before it even started. Nobody was going to beat Reagan. Those early polls suggesting that Mondale could win were quite laughable. In the end, it was a throwaway election with the Democratic Party nominating Jimmy Carter’s VP after Carter’s landslide loss to Reagan four years earlier.

How did Mondale win here lol, I'm not surprised he lost by a landslide considering how weak his campaign was.

A less sensationalist debate than current debates. I may not agree with them but it's clear they've put thought into their positions.

This should be a model for how politics should be. They disagree without personal attacks, insults or drama. There’s obvious respect for each other and the dignity of the office they are seeking.

Rev. Jackson just couldn't put a sentence together coherently. He could have been Obama in 1984, but I always felt that hurt him...

America wasn't ready for a black man to be President in 1984 cause too many of the WW2 folks were still around. Jesse is a powerful speaker and he can move the audience to tears it's just that America has a love lust relationship with white males.

Jesus would have lost to Reagan in a landslide in 1984. Also Jackson never won an election prior. Obama he was and is not.
