1984 Evinrude 6hp Outboard Motor Lake Test

This motor had the crankshaft splines completely washed out of it. I made a repair with a machined crankshaft extension wich I attached a 6-point 3/8" hex socket to. the drive shaft was shortened and machined to fit the 3/8" socket to make a hex drive to replace the original spline. it proved itself on the lake today and ran as much as 14 mph. Very nice running little motor.

Very nice 👍. I just picked up a 1966 6 ho Fisherman for $100.00.. I changed the whole water pump assembly to the newer style with the cup .. i opened up the thermostat and it was cruddy and nasty, i cleaned up the passages and replaced the thermostat and gasket.. it runs so good, im thinking about keeping it, possibly getting a little 14 foot boat for our cottage up in Hayward Wisconsin.. you can't beat the dependablity of these little guys . I have bought a couple 1st generation Evinrude 6s for $100. They're great little motors. The new style water pump is nice since the liner is replaceable and they do a great job of pumping water. It's pretty common for the stat and passages to be kind of cruddy. With the work you did, it should be a nice runner again for years to come. If you don't already have another 6hp, you may as well keep this one. The first generation 6hps are great runners and very durable and reliable. This one is a 2nd generation 6hp. These are considerably stronger runners, but they do have some design changes from the older ones that are, in my opinion, less desirable than the earlier ones. The powerheads are more susceptible to damage from an overheat should one occur. The gearcases are not as robust either. The design of the later gearcase lacks a good bearing for the reverse gear and can be easily worn out if used for backtrolling. It is an impressively strong runner for 6hp though. It will run circles around my first generation 6hps in terms of performance. Thanks for watching!

I was definitely impressed with this little 6 horse. I have 5.5's and 6's that will plane my boat, but none will push over 11 mph. This one at 14 was quite surprising. This Model K Alumacraft does seem to be a slightly faster hull than my FD for whatever reason. It is almost identical in design from the transom to about two feet from the bow other than being two feet longer. The bow profile is slightly different, but I would have never expected this 16 foot boat to be faster than its 14 foot cousin. This is the only boat I have broken 20mph with a 10 horse on as well and I have done that with two different 10s now. I'm curious to see how it performs with a variety of different motors. This one is in pretty nice shape. It was pretty dirty when I bought it amd it is still in need of some cleanup under the cover, but it did clean up nicely on the outside. It started up.amd ran so nicely, I knew I needed to come up with a plan to save it with a new kind of mechanical coupling to get power back to the gearcase. Thanks for watching!

These are pretty incredible little motors. They don't survive overheats like the earlier generation 6hps did and the lower unit isn't as durable, but they certainly have the performance edge over the earlier models. Thanks for watching!

That thing cruises 😂, I didn’t expect that, I have the same motor on my fishing boat as my trolling motor but the throttle linkage is broken and the impeller is no good but the engine runs amazing

Yup, I do believe I'll hold on to this one. Yes it has the three blade prop. This one definitely has enough poop to swing it too. I remember seeing your post of a similar repair you made on a 3 of 4hp. I couldn't find it again on the Club website, but then I have trouble finding things on there that were posted a few years back. What does the tilt latch handle do i have the same on my outboard and i cant figure it out its my first boat. In what position should it be ? Pointing inside the motor lime in your video or outside ? Thank you

The tilt lock handle is for the tilt/reverse lock. The motor is designed to be run with the latch in the lock position. It is unlocked to allow the motor to be tilted up by hand. If an object is struck while underway, the mechanical lock is designed to be overcome by the strike. That will allow the motor to tilt up and avoid damage to the lower unit while the object is cleared. Having it locked allows rapid slowdown and reversing without having the motor tilt up and out of the water which can adversely affect handling as well as cause water to be directed into the boat. I have 76 6hp evinrude. I took it out on the water today to see how she runs. I was only getting a top speed of like 9mph. I know I need to mess with the trim that will help a bit. But I was wondering if you have any suggestions on getting a little more speed out of the motor. She runs good. Cold start on third pull and after it warms up she starts on the first pull.

@@asclark0970 I think you're getting pretty typical performance out of your '76 6hp. The '84 6hp in this video is the next generation of 6hp and shares very little in common with the 1st generation 6hp motors. The early ones are probably more durable than these later ones. The second generation motors really perform well for their rating though. I very much enjoy this little motor. Thanks for watching!

I don't really like giving values on motors because the value depends on so many factors. A like new '84 Evinrude 9.9 in my area would likely sell for somewhere between $800-$1000 if it is a short shaft. Long shafts are more common and sell lower. Maybe more, maybe less depending upon whether it was recently serviced and what time of year it was being sold. Electric start will also raise the value. Sometimes they get snapped up at the high end of the range and sometimes they sit for a long time at the low end. Thanks for watching.

I was highly impressed with 14mph out of this motor. I know these are a completely different breed from the older generation 6hp of the 65-79 era. I really like the way the older ones run, but these will outperform them very handily. My older ones are usually good for around 10-11 mph on a good day. Thanks for watching!

OK, I understand how you adapted the driveshaft to the square cut out insert in the crank...Just don't understand what and how you secured the other insert into the stripped crank...This is a fatal design flaw on these engines, looks like even this fresh water motor fell victim to it...The splines love to rust together also. These gearcases should be pulled yearly to clean and relube the splines...Real easy on these engines with no shift rod connection. These engines are no match for the old 6hp ruggedness, but they do out run the old ones for sure....

@@davekimbler2308 I don't think it has a lot of run time on it either. It is pretty dirty under the hood though. The outside cleaned up great. The inside could use a bit more detailing. Judging by how it runs, I believe it spent more time in storage than on the water by far.

I turned a round piece that pressed into the crankshaft bore and shouldered on the end of the crankshaft. The other end of that part had a 3/8" square drive machined on it. The 3/8: 6-point socket was placed over the square drive and the part was lightly pressed into the crankshaft and shouldered to ensure squareness. Once all that was together it was all carefully welded to the end of the crankshaft while making sure clearance still existed for disassembly if required sometime in the future. Once all that was together measurements were taken to see how much had to be cut off the splined end of the drives shaft. That cut was made and the drive shaft was milled with a 3/8" hex on the end that would engage the socket that had been welded to the crank. At the bottom of the hex, an o-ring groove was cut to hold an o-ring to keep grease in and water out just like it would have been on a spline drive. The connection was greased and the lower unit was reinstalled. I will check this motor at the end of the season to see how the new drive has faired. These things definitely have it in the performance department over the old 6hps. I still love how the old ones run though. Thanks for watching, Don!

@@fleetwin1 Yes. That is exactly what I did. The insert is welded into the crank and the socket is welded to the insert. The hex on the drive shaft engages the 6-point socket and an O-ring seals the grease in just like it it is supposed to on the spline. I was shocked to see how much (nearly all) of the spline remained on the drive shaft, but none of it survived in the crank. The O-ring was gone, of course, but I do not know if the vibration / grinding of the spline getting wiped out ate the O-ring up or if it was never replaced when the lower unit was reinstalled.

@@raymoore518 The 3s are great little trolling motors. It makes for a long ride if you are trying to get to the fishing hole though. I would recommend no less than 10hp for your boat unless you don't typically have anyone else along. 10-15hp is a good place to be for power for a typical 14 foot aluminum semi-vee. Unfortunately I don't ship motors either. TX is a long haul for a small outboard. There must be something decent available closer to you. Hope you're able to find one.

The reverse lock on these motors is intended to be run in the locked position while traveling forward. If an underwater obstruction is impacted, the latch will spring over the pin and allow the motor to tilt up and out of the way. It keeps the motor from drifting up when slowing down or reversing. The only time it needs to be unlocked is to manually tilt the motor up. Thanks for watching.

@@anthonyjackson6321 Yes, the 87 model has the same tilt lock mechanism. The same applies to it. The '53 and '54 J/E motors had an automatic tilt lock that locked the motor in the down position in neutral and reverse (or only reverse if adjusted that way). In 1955, J/E went to a manual lock woth the lover on the transom bracket between the clamp screws. That latch underwent a couple of changes over the decades, but any of the OMC tilt locks including the side mounted lever style that was used on the 9.9/15 work this way. The "lock" or "run" position should be used at all times when running the motor except when manually tilting it up or when using "shallow water drive" on those motors so equipped.
