"Alright...Hole shot time" Says the man with a six horse outboard. Actually, the wake in the last scene where you were going back to the ramp looked pretty good. I am looking for a 15hp for my 12' boat and have not had much success. In the process, I passed up a reasonably priced 6hp thinking it would not have done what I wanted. Now I see I was mistaken and the 6hp would likely have been okay.

Depending on load, you'll be happier with a 9.5/9.9. Speaking from my own experience having owned more than 5 six horses. Never looked back after running some 9.5s. Of course, if you can find a great deal for the 6, why not.

I use one of those 6 hp motors for a kicker motor for trolling. That little motor can get my 16' boat up to 7MPH via GPS, you were going at least twice that. I found most boats need to go at least 15 MPH to get on plane. When doing comparisons it is good practice to use actual measureables like RPM and speed.

Thanks for posting Brandon. Quick question for you on this motor: I’m looking to install a telltale and was thinking I could just drill through the exhaust cover on the tiller side of the powerhead…did same on my 9.9 with success but was wondering if you have any thoughts on whether this would work.

@ct1762
@ct1762 2 жыл бұрын
@@therosses5 well if its overheating badly enough to shut it down, your motor is fried. does it restart after squeezing the bulb? my first thought would be bad fuel pump or dirty carb. put your hand on the head at idle until it warms up. you should be able to put your finger on the top for 3 full seconds without burning yourself (150 degrees). next time squeeze the primer bulb as you get on plane and see if it delays stalling. if it does, get a new fuel pump. if not, pull the choke. if it picks up then dies, its the carb.

Tachometer reading would have been interesting to know. Especially with those slipping 2 bladers. Do you know what year the power outlet/battery charging option was introduced in those motors? (i see no place for the outlet plug in that one)
@ct1762
@ct1762 2 жыл бұрын
i don't believe they ever made one with a charging system. the later models changed in 1980 as a 7.5hp (and in 84' same motor but 6hp at the prop) did have them, definitely for the sail version.
@BrandonsGarage
@BrandonsGarage 2 жыл бұрын
RI is correct, however, 77, 78, and 79 had the CD ignition, you could add a stator to it. With a stator, add a rectifier somewhere, and with that, you now have 12v.
@-Viceroy-
@-Viceroy- 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonsGarage That's weird. I have one late 70's 6hp with a charge coil and an outlet in the side of the lower motor cover (no rectifier. I guess the rectifier comes with some sort of a charging kit/harness). Engine Model No. 69B66E
@ct1762
@ct1762 2 жыл бұрын
@@-Viceroy- these can get weird model wise! anything is possible , especially with motors made for the overseas market. some oddballs out there. That kit was most likely a retrofit from a later one... unless you are sure its a factory one? Brandon is spot-on: the CD ignition models use the same armature plate 4-60hp of that era, which means it would be easy to add the 5 amp power coils.

Needles, Jack Smith Marina. On this boat, and one of similar size, the 6 HP can battle the current just fine. When you get under 4 HP, or larger loads, is when problems arise.

@ChippyOZ
@ChippyOZ 2 жыл бұрын
Found a puller but was unable to secure it to the front of the prop hub or blades. So positioned the outboard horizontally with the prop facing upwards, sprayed a rust breaker all around the prop shaft to soak in, used a propane torch to heat up the prop shaft a bit to get the juices flowing, held up the weight of the outboard by holding onto the prop and hit the end of the prop shaft dead on with a hammer. It started to move very slowly after a few strikes and then continued on carefully until it fully came off. Prop shaft had some rust and pitting and the inside of the prop hub had corrosion. Cleaned it all up and slid back together nicely with some triple guard. Not sure if it was the best way to do it but was all I could manage.
